OT power window controler

have a dodge dakota, the passenger side window control stopped working.. i was told that the problem is not the control unit for that window, but the problem is the drivers side window controler.. i can raise and lower the window on the passenger side using the control on the drivers side door.. how is that possible, if that is true. i think it would be the passenger side window control is faulty??

My experience, other vehicles may be different. It's called a safety switch, prevents youngsters from accidentally getting hurt by getting their arms or even head caught in a closing window. Possible someone bumped the switch & didn't realize it.
On my GM vehicles there is a rocker switch on the driver's door, disconnects the other switches. It is marked so can tell at a glance if it is set or not. Some have a picture of a window with a padlock. On SWMBO's econocar it is a push button. Push once for normal, push again for disconnect.

We have a 2010 Dodge Avenger, it just started doing the same thing. Window doesn't work with the passenger side button but does work from the driver's side. Thought ours was a unique problem.

It might be the safety switch like Willie said. Also could be a loose connection. My son, the car tech, fixed the one on our Buick by holding the window button down and slamming the door shut. It worked and saved us a few bucks. Costs nothing to try it.

CB, It's the passenger side window module. Had the same problem on our G.M.C. Drivers side control worked passenger side just great. Put in a new passenger side module, no more problem HTH LOU

It's possible. Power for the passenger side has to first go through the driver side, not only for the child lock but also so the window motor doesn't get simultaneous "up" and "down" commands.

The only way to know for sure is to break out your meter. If the guy who made the diagnosis used a voltmeter, I'd be inclined to believe him.

Controls? Modules? Why make it so complicated and mysterious???

Very simply, you have a bad switch. You can get one from a salvage yard or a new one from the dealer or parts store. Takes about a minute to replace. There are no exotic mysteries or black magic going on!

A power window switch is very simply a DPST (double pole, single throw) momentary contact switch that is hard wired to the battery and the window lift motor. There is also a power relay that provides power to the switch.
Here is the diagnostic:
If one or more windows operates, the master switch on the driver's door is receiving power.
If one or more of the remote windows does not operate from the master switch, but operates from the remote switch, the master switch is bad.
If windows ONLY operate from the master switch, then the window lock on the master switch is activated, disabling the remote switches.

Over the years, safety features have been added to make the power windows safer for young people. A relay is used to cause the windows to be powered only when the ignition switch is in the ON or ACC positions. Another relay was also added to allow the windows to be operated after the key is turned off - untol a door is opened. This allows closing the windows without having to restart the car.

Also - and somewhat less common is the wiring at the driver door hinge area. There is a wiring harness that goes from the door to the body for operating electrical devices that have switches in the door. In older cars/trucks, it was common for high mileage vehicles to have broken wires in this harness from repeated opening and closing of the driver's door. This is less common in later model vehicles due to improved wire alloy, friction reduction, and strain relief.

I speak from over 45 years of fixing these things for a living.
