Often I buy filters from napa or car quest and 2 things are consistant 1) rather its fuel or oil the filters come in a paper board box that has been sitting on the shelf so long you can write your name in the dust on the top that doesnt bother me as much as the fact that the element almost is never in a plastic wrapper 2) the canister sealing ring is rarely in the box most of the time never. In light of this I discovered at walmart they carry Fram and I have purchased filters for both my farmall C and Farmall H and have been completely satisfied to find the element comes sealed in plastic with the rubber sealing ring. Its a shame that this is what people have to settle for from national parts store chains. It also seems that Fram is changing their filter numbers cause ive had difficulty locating filters for my various farmalls the numbers do not match and cant be found on their websites. This situation is frustrating. Where can I find quality american made filters that come with the necessary rubber ring?

I buy Baldwin for my tractor, have never not had the rubber ring. I use WIX for spin on applications. Quit using Fram 2 years ago when they cheapened the filter construction by reducing the amount of metal that meets up with the oil boss.

It bothers me too when there is no plastic wrapper. It makes me wonder how much dust is going to go into the pump with the fuel. You are better off not being able to find the Fram filter.

Keep using Fram filters and you will find out what real repairs are. They are making JUNK filters anymore. Had two different guys have engine problems that last two years that where directly caused by a Fram filter. Both filters had the bypass stick open and ran some metal into the main bearings.

You guessed wrong,I wont use Fram filters in my truck or tractors.Fellow spent time opening filters from different brands and put his findings on the internet. You better look at the report.

In 28 years of heavy equipment selling and repair, I agree with JD, I have seen more engine failures with fram filters than all the other brands combined. Somehow they just build a filter that is not as good doing the job. Wix seems to be a pretty good filter and we really have never had problems with NAPA or Baldwin.

NAPA gold filters are rebadged Wix filters.

Your dealer is stocking parts that have next to no demand for their customers. Although I hate the thought of the dusty filter box, if someone would do something like come in and buy some of those parts on a regular basis, the dust wouldn't be on them.

I'd prefer if they were wrapped in plastic, too, but almost every Fleetgard and CIH filter I've bought for a letter-series IH tractor that was wrapped in plastic had that plastic torn somewhere.

The gasket has never been included with NAPA 1125/WIX 51125/CARQUEST 85125, at least since I've bought them. Why? I don't know. Everybody else's M filters come with them. It's a bit baffling when the 1172/51172/85172 comes with the gasket.

Last I checked, gasket part numbers for the smaller diameter filters (NAPA 1125/1172) are:

NAPA: 5070
WIX: 15070
CARQUEST: 90070
BALDWIN: G107
HASTINGS: G107
FLEETGUARD: 326010
CNH/CIH/IH: 13728D

It does work the other way as well. Some NAPA/WIX/CARQUEST filters come gaskets that other Mfr's. filters do not. NAPA 1253 (Hyd. filter for 06-56-66, etc. tractors) comes with the cover gasket and necessary o-rings. When I last used them, CIH's and Fleetguard's filters for those applications did not.

As always, quality may cost pennies more but can save thousands in the long run.
