OT Spoiled Brat

Have this Boston Terrier going on 1 year old. Obviously house
dog with us 24/7, obviously wants what you are eating. Have
gone through the gauntlet of feed for this critter. Just about run
out of options.,

Current malay is Old Roy Chicken stew for breakfast and Alpo
beef for supper. However, for her to eat either it has to have
some human food in it. Current working medium is sour cream.
Without sour cream she won't eat it. So I stir a little in with it
and away she goes.

So I just finished supper and she half ate hers. I sit down here to
chat on the www and take my leaf spinach salad with me....fresh
leaf spinach, sliced onions, boiled eggs, and Italian salad
dressing.

She woofs down the spinach right out of my hand like there is no
tomorrow.....but didn't finish her high $$$ supper. Gimme a
break! Anybody else have a misdirected spoiled brat like this?
Feel sorry for you if you do.

Mark

Yeah, but we didn't consider him a brat, 'cause WE spoiled him! But until his health began to fail, he would eat prepared food for canines. (aka dog food), as well as "people food".
My daughter asked the vet if it was OK, and he said yes, except not feed him too many scraps with fat, etc. in them. He gave her a list of things that a dog should NOT eat, onions and chocolate, for example. But we cooked enough to make sure that there was enough for Bubba to have a serving also. He would eat almost any type of breakfast food, he loved pimento cheese sandwiches, raw apple slices and even "Sweet Tarts" candy. Whatever my daughter snacked on, Bubba snacked right along beside her!

obviously, you're going to have to eat some of her dog food in front of her so she knows how good it is:)

Texasmark1,

Minnie Lou is our one year old Boston Terrier. She is an absolute terror. Everything in our house that is one foot or less from the floor has been chewed on. Furniture, baseboards, waste baskets, you name it, it has teeth marks on it.

She is somewhat picky about eating and certainly enjoys sharing cheese, jello, and ice cream with me.

My wife recently ordered some Dinovite off the internet. We've only been feeding it her (as a supplement to her regular dog food) for about a week, but she really loves the stuff.

Let me be clear about this also, we absolutely love her and revel in her antics even when she's destructive.

Dogs. You gotta love 'em.

Tom in TN

PS. She helps me feed the livestock every morning. It's really funny to see her racing with the calves.

So are you complaining or bragging?
For me pets eat pet food and when they get hungery enough they will.

Not this one. She will go for several days if she doesn't get what she wants, but drives you nuts at the table where you are eating mooching for something to eat. We don't feed her at the table but that doesn't keep her from mooching.

Mark

I try to look at the bright side. She too has chewed or peed or pooped on everything in the house even though we have purchased hundreds of the little dog trainer mats you can get at WW. She refuses to be house broken. She chews on everything including door moulding, wooden furniture, vinyl foot stool, fabric furniture, her little gates we use to keep her in a certain part of the house at certain times and on and on.

When she gets mad at you, which she does, she deliberately does her thing in the most obnoxious places just to annoy you. Any body that says that animals are driven by instinct alone don't know what they are talking about. This one clearly has and uses her intellect and free will, contrary to the teachings of the catholicchurch which preached to me for most of my life that we humans are the only ones with such.....my foot!!!!! Additionally she has an attitude and will pout for days if she gets scolded or has to do something she dislikes; besides making her messes.

My woman has had 6 in her life and just had to have another. I tolerate the dog for her pretty much but she is starting to wear on me and I do enjoy playing with her and her toys. She says that this is the most unruly she has had.

I have over a dozen dog toys I bought her. She likes the soft rubber chickens with the squeaker. Likes to grab them by the neck like a dog would do in real life.

Can't let her outside. She runs off down the road and doesn't want to get out of the road nor come back home.

Will look into the Dinovite dog food. Thanks for the tip.

And the rest of the world think Americans are spoiled!! I wonder why?

Sorry couldn"t resist. In all seriousness, it comes down to who the pack leader is.( or in this case, head of house) We make a mistake when we treat dogs like humans. They are dogs. It creates a whole host of problems for them. Yes, they are great companions and should be loved and cared for, but who should be doing the training? Dogs will readily accept and appreciate knowing who the pack leader is. They will know they are loved and who it is that feeds them and will respect you for it. Letting them run amuck may be cute, but its not good for them.

Okay, I know, let jump off my soap box.

By the way I love dogs. Black labs especially!

Agree with no chocolate nor onions. Seems if she sees you eating it she feels it's ok for her too. If I take supper watching TV she is right there in my lap helping me do supper. Matters not what I stick in her mouth, down it goes.

Mark

This is like no dog I ever had in my life. She has her own mindset and it will "be her way or the highway". I have a Dingo out in the yard and she is a pill, rightly so as the breed needs attention, bred that way so I hear, but nothing like the terrier.

Mark

mine"s spoiled too, but my mother in law had 2 dogs that she fried a pound of burger for when she came home from work, the one would not eat it unless she put pepper on it,....saw it with my own eyes

I just looked into Dinovite and that is what we need if we were to feed her off the table which it may come to. I was worried about her getting the necessary vitamins and other nutrients. Pet Smart stores have it and they are located around here.

Thanks for the tip.

Mark

Ours will go in the garden and pick tomatoes not the green ones just the ones that are starting to turn. This year she started on the peppers. She won't eat lettuce unless she see you eat it first. The potatoes don't stand a chance between her and the deer. The under ground fence took care of most of the above problems

Looks like she doesn't need Dinovite.....she is taking care of her vitamins and minerals herself.

My dad would say starve or eat your choice. But I know what you mean. I have a mutt that has to have butter on toast every morning. If not he whines all day long.

I gave my cat a piece of steak once, after that she would sit by my leg when I sat at the table to eat, and she would take her paw and very gently dig her nails into my pant leg for a taste of what I was eating, a piece of hot dog, hamburger, fish sausage ect. At one time early after I got the cat, my wife was sitting on the couch and opened a bag of chips, I was at work, but when I came home my wife said, I opened a bag of chips today and your cat came flying down the stairs, jumped on the couch and ate pieces of potatoe chips. Lol, that cat loved people food.

We cook up fresh eggs for our boxers. Anything that is cracked, we cook it up. Occasionally, I will give them uncracked eggs. Never spiced it up for them. We had one female boxer that wouldn't eat her dog food unless I sprinkled some parmesan cheese on it. She would look at it and softly growl until I put the cheese on it.

Got a shepherd/husky/lab/whatever came over the fence last. 60# of stupid. Turns up his nose at about any dry dogfood. Wife takes him to the vet, they always say he's overweight, (he ain't), tell wife to put him on a diet of expensive canned food. It molds and rots in the bowl. Absolutely refuses to eat it. Leftovers, are what he loves - even some vegetables. Wish I could get grandkids to eat as well as he does!

I met "Cali" at the dump.. I was laying on the ground working on a John Deere Gator and I felt a Warm body curled up behind me.. I wasn't sure what it was , kinda afraid to look back to see.. Then I heard the purring.. OK , now Cali is a resident of my house.. Pretty good manners for being at the county landfill for 3 or 4 years, on mouse patrol in the maintenance building.. She wakes up at 4 am crawls on top of my chest and reaches over to tap "Mom" on the arm.. "Not now, later".. At 5:30 she crawls on to my chest and taps "Mom" again.. Mom gets up and serves a 1/3 can of tuna [small can] every morning.. No not spoiled much.....

The reason dogs have been with us for 10,000 years is because they are SO trainable.
You trained your dog to be that way, either by encouraging the behavior or allowing it.
You can train it different if you choose.
If you don't train it different then don't complain. Maybe you just enjoy it. That's ok.
My mother would never let our dog be in the same room when we were prepairing or eating any kind of food. I always did the same thing.
No sniffing in the fridge when you open it, no waiting for scraps at the counter or table.
And never, ever ANY people food.
Dog was used to it. She had a happy life.

my father always told me a dog is what you make it. I still spoil my shiba inu he is just like another child in summer we will take him to town for ice cream.

I had a cat would would jump up where I was sitting at our kitchen counter, and beg for whatever I was eating. I shared my food with him. He is gone now, and don't regret sharing with him. He was probably cleaner than I was at times. stan

Lol, my cats gone too, and I miss my cat looking for people food. I dident start giving my new cat any.

Yup, I buy Rusty a burger at Burger King most week days. We had KFC for supper tonight and Rusty just had to have the skin off my chicken. Things he normally will not eat if I am eating it he wants some and eats it like he loves it.
I know it is my fault because I share everything I am eating with him.

A lot dogs won't eat dry food without something on it mine wait until I get their canned food on it then they eat like crazy
My border collie wants his share of my morning muffin I'm just waiting for him to want coffe with it Giggle.

My daughter and son in law feed there dog the same thing they eat. She just make one piece extra of whatever they eat and that is his meal

Now that I know about and where to get animal nutritional supplements I think that's the way it will be around here.

I never had one. My lady had 6. She told me just yesterday what kind of heartbreak it would be for her if we lost ours which will be a year old on Halloween of all days.

I said well it's coming one day. She said "maybe we'll beat her" meaning that at our age she may out live us. Could be.

Mark

It's 1 AM here and I am surfing the site and having a glass of milk and pastry of a sort.....I go to bed early. She got up out of my chair, where she likes to sleep, and came to get her share. I gave her the saucer which she licked shiny clean and went back to bed.

Yes I guess they are people. Well when you interact 24/7 they do get to be family. No doubt in my mind that interaction has a profound effect on the nature of the dog. Learning that a Boston Terrier is half bull and half terrier, it's easy to see behavioral traits in each breed in her daily activities.

Mark

This dog is an edge dweller. She knows when she is doing wrong but does it anyway. When she gets scolded she pouts and pouting usually results in urine and fecal matter all over the house and eating even less.

If I challenge her on said items she gets on the defensive and stands her ground barking at me and jumping up and down like I was some sort of stranger. This dog will go 2 days (where we set the limit) fasting when she is of a mind. So the "you trained her" doesn't always apply!

Mark

I had a couple of cats a couple of years ago. One was a Siamese half breed but maintained the blood lines. I loved that cat. The other I tolerated. Both didn't like canned cat food but loved tuna. So tuna was their diet. I lost both due to malnutrition so said the vet. I am trying to not loose this dog.

So sir, may I suggest that you look up something that was suggested to me by a respondent in this thread. It's Dinovite and is available online or around here at Pet Smart. They have a formula for cats and dogs. It's vitamins and minerals that my cats needed and didn't get from tuna.

Mark

That's what blows me away. This dog was eating fresh spinach with me out of a spinach salad but refused her fresh Alpo that I had put sour cream on and she loves dairy products. I draw the line on this. I'm NOT eating canned dog food just to get her to share it with me. Grin!

Mark

So what did you do? I went from Alpo to the Old Roy prepared food in the plastic containers with the colored plastic tops. She likes the Chicken stew with rice best but not always. Putting some sour cream on Alpo or that works sometimes.

What she turns her nose up at I take out to the Dingo and she woofs down what ever you put in front of her.....after she smells it and thinks about it if she never ate it before.

Mark

My yellow lab eats pretty much anything I do, saves letting left-overs go bad in the fridge. But before WW2 that's mostly what dogs ate anyhow. He loves McDonald's cheeseburgers. Usually stop and get him one or two when he rides to town with me. And he likes fries, but only after they've cooled. Normally keep a dish of wally-world dog food out for him but instead of filling it once a day, I have to put less in it twice a day because the flippin cats got prolific this summer.

Oh, and he LOVES green beans and asparagus.

Now if I could keep the one kitten from last summer out of the basement when I start the fire- I don't know what else to do with her besides shoot her- she ran into a plume of carb cleaner last night rather than run back outside. It turned my tomcat around last fall and he's only been in the basement once since then.
