4230 vibration

Just looking for a place to start.My John Deere 4230 has developed a vibration of some kind when I am running the 540 pto only.It smooths out when going down hill but starts to vibrate as soon as the tractor is in a strain.I do not notice the vibration when running the 1000 rpm pto.

Any ideas?

I would guess that the vibration is coming from the PTO clutch. I believe that there is more torque in the PTO when it is run at 540 and therefore it is more likely that the clutch is slipping.

Have you hooked up another machine to isolate to the tractor and not the drive line of the machine your hooked to? Only a though as I don't have that tractor.

Torque on clutch will be the same whether 540 or 1000, only if load is different. Clutch turns same rpm for either.

I'd inspect the drive shaft attached to the implement for bad u-joint or bending. Did you try pulling same implement with a different tractor to see if vibration continued or went away? Does drive shaft happen to have a CV joint?

There is no cv joint.The only 540 pto I have is on my baler.I have not checked the u joints mostly because the tractor seems to be laboring more than usual when the vibration exists.I will pull the shaft off the baler and inspect it.

That does sound like a bad U-joint. Luckily, that would also be the easiest and least expensive thing to fix if one is bad.

Have someone else run the baler as you walk along side and listen to the U-joints when the baler works hard. One U-joint may be chattering pretty loudly by now if you can feel the vibration at the tractor seat. Your tractor has a Sound-Guard cab?

The vibration is getting worse.It seems to be coming from the the tractor.I have used 2 different implements.It increases when going up a hill and seems to cause tractor to loose power.It vibrated with the 540 and 1000 rpm shaft.
Any ideas where to start would be a big help

Well I am back looking for help again.The vibration is coming from the engine.It seems to be a fuel issue.I have changed the fuel filter 3 times and drained the fuel tank.The vibration still exists when under a load.Yesterday I noticed what looked to be rust in bottom of the glass filter but no water was seen.Any ideas other than keep changing the filters which cost $15.00 each.

Have you periodically checked for water in fuel tank by opening drain cock on bottom of the fuel tank?
