McCormick reaper

I have been told that a man by the name of Obed Hussy invented the reaper before McCormick did.
Why did Cyrus get the credit for his, and not Hussy?
If Hussy had of gotten the credit of inventing the first reaper there might be a name change in the International Harvestor Company. I wonder what it would have been called?

You are correct in that- McCormick was the first to successfully produce and market the reaper, but did not invent it. If I recall correctly, Obed Hussey had other inventions as well but did not have the resources to turn them into production. A really good book that gives a thorough history of harvesting machinery and tells the story of U.S. agriculture is "The Dream Reaper" by Craig Canine (sp?).

Nope, that wasn't his name, it was a corporate identity thing for advertising and stuff.
His name was Harry S Massey and he invented everything first and best.. it all still works great... and his grandson played Abe Lincoln and scary bad guys in all the old movies...

Obed Hussey did, indeed, patent a reaper prior to McCormick. Obed's patent was granted in 1833. McCormick's in June of 1834. They were in fierce competition and after both made several patented innovations to their respective reapers, Hussey was driven out of business and virtually forgotten. Daniel Massey, on the other hand, didn't even open a shop to build farm equipment until 1847 and a very simple shop it was. He jumped in with his own designs for reapers somewhat later.

He might have built everything "best" but he certainly wasn't "first" in the context of the subject of this thread. Massey and Alanson Harris didn't merge to become Massey Harris until 1891, some 58 years after Hussey patented his reaper.
