Torque Specifications

I'm putting my mower deck back together after replacing 2 destroyed blade driver bearings. Can't find a definitive answer anywhere on what the nut torque should be on a 1/2", zinc plated, grade 5 bolt and nylon lock nut. They are the bolts that mount the bearing assembly to the deck. I've seen everything from 45 ft. lbs. to 150 ft. lbs.. I locked the nuts down at 100#. I'm just a bit concerned that might be a tad too much for a 1/2" bolt and don't want this thing coming apart 250 miles from here where I use it on a food plot. Would anyone know what the torque spec for the nut should be? Am I over? Or under? Or should I just quit being picky about a mounting bolt and leave it as is at 100#? Thanks!

you are a little to tight
But the only thing I torque down is things that must be perfectly flat such as a motor head or rod/main caps so I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

1/2-20 is 85 ft lbs X 75% because it is plated = 63.75 ft lbs

I agree with caterpillar guy ! When you said nylock nut, all possibility of a "proper" torque just flew out the window !

Hello Tom Bond,

I agree with bob 100# is way too much for that size and grade bolt. Back it off 25 to 30%,

Guido.

Not really. You just get the torque it takes to turn the nut with the threads fully engaged before to to touch whatever it is tightening against. Add that torque to the normal torque.
