Tractorvet's post on the repowered Olivers got me to thinking(dangerous thing!),How many of you have repowered tractors?Either done by you or someone else?'Hatchet Job in a farm shop or a professional job?
 
I've got a combine engine in my 1850 Oliver,but it's a 354 Perkins,same as the tractor had originally.

I neither have a repowered nor a homemade tractor.
Homemade tractors were very popular in Eastern Germany in the post WWII years. Link shows some fine examples.

I put an 855 Cummins in a 2470 Case 4wd. Read about many conversions, Cummins was the most common go to. Found a machinist in another state to make (and cook) the adapter plate. Had to extend the frame, make front engine mount....lotsa other details. Cummins has fantastic lugging ability- it"s still running for current owner. Did the conversion in the 90s.
 
We installed a Deere 219 diesel into a late 45 combine. We also installed a 12 valve 5.9 Cummins into a 1967 Ford F350. The combine swap wasnt so bad but the truck swap required more effort.
 
I havent yet but I have two 5.9 cummins waiting for a new home.My preference is an 806/856 but if I catch a good 1850 Oliver I may go that route.One of the best moves I have made was putting a 5.9 in my 93 F250 4x4.
 
When I started farming, to cut costs, we repowered two 1950T Olivers, bought with low hours for cheap with blown up 310 engines.
I fitted 454 Chevy engines that I optimized for propane with different cams and high compression heads.
They worked out very well, make in excess of 150 pto HP at 2500 rpm. Have put in excess of 10,000 hours on each tractor, only repairs have been they need new rockerarms and pushrods every 6000 hrs or so.
I still own and use both of them more than 30 years later.

If you install a heavier engine, consider the strength of the front axle and the capabilities of the power steering.

Had friend put a big V8 in a Studebaker pickup that originally had a 6 cylinder. There was so much weight on the front axle and no power steering. He wrestled it about 5 miles and parked it, never to run again.
 
I repowered a Versatile 125, that was an early articulated 4WD with a 391 Ford gas engine in it.

I found a deal on a Detriot diesel 6-71 engine that I fitted to the versatile. Because the engine bay was designed for a short V8, I had to lenthen the hood and frame about 10 inches to make it fit.
That made a good tractor out of it after I added duals to absorb the extra hoursepower and upgraded the top shaft bearings in the transmission.
 
We also built a reversed super W9 with front end loader and 305 Chevy for power.

Another was a GB Moline erepowered with a 383 Chrysler V8, fitted with a front end loader with large bucket. That was aur free stall dairy barn cleaning tractor and #1 snow mover for 15 years.

I repowered a 1935 F20 with a 327 HP chevy engine. It is set up with both the F20 trany and the Chevy 4 speed Muncie.
It is a really strong puller if you gear it down. I have had it up to 40 mph, but I get real nervous at that speed.
 
Farm I used to work at in Colorado, used to build their own tractors out of old airport tugs. I only saw them as a kid, but one of the guys said they would run fast enough, that you could be pulling a field cultivator down the road, and pass the Greyhound bus.
When Versatile started making a good tractor, they went to them. The last year I was out there, they bought 17 new 976 Versatile tractors.
 
Repowered an early Ford 5000 with a seized 233 diesel with a 256 gas from a Ford (Claas) 622 combine...but the only difference between that 256 and the one in later 5000's was the belt driven governor, which was removed.
 
Repowered a Deere 140 garden tractor - took out the 14hp single cylinder - shoe horned in a Briggs 18hp Vangard V-twin. Works like a champ!Actually minor changes in the frame, etc.
 
I stuffed a 6BT cummins in a 190XT Allis Chalmers. It looks stock. My next project is a 2-70 White getting a 6BT also.

Never took any pictures, but Iam going up to the farm in the next week or two. I will see if I can some pictures. I used the case radiator. The engine came from a 310 loader, had the clutch on the engine, so used it. Had to grind some from the flywheel housing so it would fit between the rails. Everett

I put a Perkins 510 v8 and added turbo, in a Belarus 500, wanted cheap power, to see how strong the back end was for tractor pulling.
Have also put 4 and 6 cyl 2700 series industrial ford diesel motors in Fordson Majors.

First transplant i did was to replace the thirsty V8 petrol engine in our Range Rover with a high speed Perkins diesel, went from 18mpg to 35mpg and little or no driving difference.
Then I repowered my swather from a horrible Belarus engine to a Perkins 4.300 out of a Massey 410 combine. This was an easy swap except for the front engine mounts took a bit of fabing.
We then rebuilt a Ferguson 20 with the Standard engine for tractor pulling. Used the standard block and Triumph TR4 racing car bits to get 200 hp out of that small engine....twinchoke webers did the trick!
We then fitted two Ferguson tractors with Perkins 3.152 engines, one engine came from a compressor and the other came out of a boat!
Next was a comon enough swap...A Massey 165 engine into a Massey 35...hardest part was sorting out the air intake manifold!
I have also changed 3 Massey 35 4cylinder tractors over to 3 cylinder Perkins. Also done 3 early Ford 5000 tractors to the later engine, one was changed for a 7600 engine....Easy enough swap. The only photos I have are of the 2 Fergies fitted with the Perkins 3 cyls.

Grandpa was having trouble with his injection pump on his AC 185. He was in his 80's and feeding cattle. He had big bales, was lifting the bale feeder over the bale, but could not do that anymore. He wanted a loader with grapple to lift the bales into the feeder. Went to Wells Implement in Plymouth Nebraska and wanted to trade for a gas tractor to put said loader on. Wells had all the parts to convert that diesel to gas-using parts off a combine! Manifold and everything was pure AC! Grandpa was SO proud of this set up, and it worked SO well for him!
