Hydraulic jack

I have a small bottle jack that quit working, won't pump up. Seems like I saw on here once that somebody knew how to make them work. I've tried leaving it upside down, doesn't help. TIA if you have any suggestions.

it might be air bound--open the valve all the way with the jack retracted and pump it a good amount.

I bought one that the nut had come off the bottom of the ram. I put it back on but I lost the ball and spring that were in the valve and I have never did find them.

Basically a bottle jack works by a small piston forcing oil past a ball and spring into the ram cavity. That's it. So as long as the oil can enter the piston cylinder past the check valve and then get out into the ram cavity past that check valve it should work. What stops them up is junk in the passages, broken springs and rust. They aren't that tough to fix, but finding the correct parts can be a chore.

I spent an hour, on the phone, once, trying to
find a kit for a Chinese Jack. I finally reached an importer, in Los Angeles, who said: "Look
Buddy, I'm in the business of importing Jacks,
Not Parts". Chinese jacks have put the good U,S,
Jack companies out of business..but are mostly
"Throw Aways"

The ram on my cheap bottle jack rusted and plugged up the ball in the ram. Cleaned it up and filled with fresh fluid and it works. It will probably be an ongoing problem but it"s only used with my arbor press.
