John Deere A

Since I am a redman I have always had Farmalls. Now I am considering a JD A. To what size Farmall does this compare. H, M C?

i would say the j.d. a is inbetween the the farmall h and m. the m is more powerful.

Bigger than an H, a little smaller than an M. Kind of depends what year the A is. They increased the HP a little over the years. All fuel vs gas also. We have all the tractors mentioned and the M out-does them all.

The Farmall M was the closest comparison but it also kind of depends on who you talk to and which year John Deere A you have. The early A was around 24 horsepower and the late A was around 38 horsepower. The Farmall M was originally 37 horsepower but after the first overhaul, most had between 45 and 55 horsepower. The Farmall M was heavier but you could add weight to either tractor. Finally, the gearing was different.

I think a late JD "A" is a little smaller than an IHC "M" but they are in the same class. A JD "B" and an IHC "H" are pretty close in their class too, 2/3rds the size of an "A" or "M".

A little less than an M, but they're great tractors.

I prefer red myself, but I gotta admit I really enjoy the hand clutch over the foot clutch...

I drive a friend's wide front A pretty often while haying - it's slowly converting me to the green side.

I find I even look forward to hearing his two cylinders fire up in the spring.

Actually restoring a B with my 4H club - that's dragging me further to the green side.

thinking the next tractor I buy will be green.

What do you plan to do with it? Personally I'd lean more towards a 60 than an A, but I'd be happy with either.

Thanks guys. I really love the red M and am currently working on an H but There are two greennies A near here for a good pric3e. I also love the old Farmall A's also Henry

as for smooth horse power the M has the Model A
beat. On a good dry ground pull a stock M has a
Stock A beat.. But if you lived or had a Wet
Farm ya better figure out a way to bleed green..

Exactly. The earlier JD As were more comparable to a Farmall H, and the earlier JD B was more comparable to a Farmall A in horsepower.
