Started combining beans today

Not going to be much there, too dry too long, too hot . Not the worst beans I've ever had here in NW Illinois, but close. I started a square 30 acre field. 6600 combine with a 213 head. I cut 4 passes on each end and made almost 1 round on the south side and the bottom section of the hopper isn't full yet. Standing on the ground looking up, you can just see the beans in the hopper. Small seeds, some green plants yet so there are some green beans and pods in the tank, tseted 10.3 on my old tester. I have the concave pulled down to 1, cylinder at 550 and still can't get some out of the pods, they are just too small. Going to have to cut around some spots where they are just too green yet. Not sure whether to bin them or just take them to town and delay payment until after Jan 1. My options are: take tractor and 2 wagons across the bridge and thru Muscatine, Ia to the south end where the elevator is( rough streets and idiot drivers). Take tractor and 2 wagons 15 miles to country elevator on county blacktops or put them in the bin and run air on them. I would rather bin them, but I doubt there will be a semi load to vac out. Seems like a lot of trouble for the trucker, but a lot easier on me. I think I'll call the trucker tomorrow and ask him if he will come for what I get off the field and go from there. Looks like crop inurance will pay this year. Chris

Chris, Bean combining has been going hot and heavy for better than a week about 30 miles southeast of St. Louis. Kind of like they've forgot about the corn. they should start sowing wheat any day now

How is the JD 213 header working for you???

As for the bean yields. They are going to be all over the board. It all depends on if you got any rain in Aug/Sept. Good friend has a 100 acres field south of Dewitt. It is a mile long. He watched it rain hard at the south end and dry at the north end right around Labor Day. South end the beans made 50-55 BPA. The North end they made 40-45 BPA. Just that one rain was the difference.

There are a few soybeans being cut around here but not many. West around Cedar Rapids there are guys going full bore at harvest.

Ours are a good two weeks off yet.

It's working a lot better than the other head I had!! I think it will work much better when it get the rust shined off. It has a tendency to bunch beans up and then feeds them all in at once, I'm thinking the reel should be moved closer the the auger. Not sure why, lots of long stems coming thru the chopper(full length plants). The manual I bought should get here today or tomorrow, then I can read thru it and see if I'm doing anything wrong. I don't think I'll take any time off from work to cut beans yet, just get what I can in the evening. It did get exciting for a couple of minutes yesterday. The battery clamps came loose and let the battery slide enough for the clamp to contact the hot post on the battery throwing sparks out from under the hood. I sure backed out of the beans in a hurry!! Got her clamped back down tight now. Chris

Saw a field that been harvested yesterday. Not near as many acres as you guys in Iowa. I'm still seeing a lot of fields with leaves turning. Some corn being chopped.

I"m gonna start tomorrow. I have a couple fields that will go, but most of the other fields still have leaves and green stems. 20 miles east of Lansing.

I started last Thursday on beans. Got a little time off over the weekend cause of the rain.

First 80 acres went about 36 bushels to the acre. The field I am in now may make 40.

The down corn that I combined last Monday and Tuesday was better than last year but that is not saying much. Only averaged 90 overall last year.

May make 140 or so this year. Maybe not. To soon to tell.

I am a little north and west of IA Gary. We have the early beans out, but later ones are a little wet yet.

They was running Beans, in one of the river bottoms, over just west of Portsmouth Ohio last night, first I have seen being done down here on the Ohio River.

I was having the same problem with my 215. Read about grinding the auger flighting to get a square edge back. Used a 4 1/2" grinder. I did that last season and it worked wonders.

Ran last week no rain here, little sprinkle sat evening. did 110 acres, 43 to 53 bu/ac, some were ponded out on flat ground, no rain in august-sept to speak of. North of Peoria IL.
