Anyone know when John Deere switched from R-12 to R-134A? I know it was mandated for vehicles in '94, but don't know what happened for agricultural stuff.

About the same time as the automobile world. WHY are you asking... if you have a DEERE tractor from that era, take a look, there will be a decal on the compressor indicating what refrigerant is used, PLUS a look at the service fittings will tell the story of how it was set up.
