Best rake to keep gravel out of chopper?

I was wondering which was the best rake to keep gravel/peddles out of chopper knives? right now im looking at a 10 wheel v rake or a rotary not sure of size yet. I just want to know which one is best for my question if you"ve had experience with them. I"m looking to upgrade and we chop most of our hay and put in silos so we always need sharp knives.

best is a hay merger made just for that purpose. we have tried everything you can imagine & the only one the will not put rocks in the windrow is a merger.

Rotary will pick up the least debris. A wheel rake has a tendency to pull surface stuff into the windrow, but, then again, you should run your pickup about an inch off the ground.

There is what we use and have a lot of rocks. Like to see a photo of that Merger.

If you've really got any rock you best get a merger... We tried for part of one season with a rotary. It just doesn't work. At the time we were mowing with a straight disc cutterbar. The solution was a discbine that made a row I could pick up... I don't need to merge for power I've got chopping... but if you need to merger rows, get a pickup merger.

like most of the others say a merger is best for what you ae asking. I use a rotary rake and really like it. I rake around twelve mph.

Either the wheel rake or rotary rake will just move the rocks into the windrow. The rotary rake would be a little better than the wheel rake.

The best thing to merge windrows is a MERGER!!! OXBO makes good ones. They can be single windrow mergers up to ones that are 40-50 feet wide. The custom harvester guys around here all use mergers. Most will NOT chop hay that has been raked.

You mentioned you put your haylage in silos. In my area the larger farmers use mergers(Oxbow). The plant where they are manufactured is about 8 miles from me.
The thinking here is that raking picks up too many stones. Most of the farms that have mergers have at least 800 acres(times at least 3 cuttings). The mergers are pretty pricey. I guess it depends on how many acres you can spread the cost out on. Economics may force you into a rake.
I would not buy a used merger. By the time they come on the used market they are high maintainence item.
High in cost of parts and mental aggravation.

With a wheel rake it'll be like chopping gravel.

We always used a NewHolland 258 roller bar rake, but you had to keep your speed down so any stones it did pick up would fall out.

thanks for the info. i figured a hay merger would be best but not looking forward to paying the price for a new one
