h.s. dropout rate continued

I happened to read the post earlier on the dropout rate. This morning on public TV there was a show about the same thing and what they are trying to do about in in Dallas. The issues they talked about are amazing. As stated earlier, the parents are mostly to blame(I think we all know a kid somewhere who wouldn't listen to anyone). I truly believe that a good role model is half the battle since kids learn a lot from watching, and that carries on into life later.
I don't know how much faith I have in some of their programs, but it may work on some kids. Some kids were overly intelligent and bored, but there were many young mothers with one or two kids. They also had some that only wanted to play football and that may be a motivater

My pa used to say " Nothing that a good kick in da A-- wouldn"t cure" I have to agree it all starts at home. Now days its breed into society that someone else will feed me.

Greg, I graduated HS in 67. Back then only about 60% of the kids graduated. This isn't a new problem. I graduated HS. So did all my kids. After graduation, my kids only had one choice, what college they would attend. I paid for it. If I'm alive, my grandkids will only have one choice too. You got it, what college they are attending.

There a large number of parents wanting their kids to be labeled special ed, so they can get a check from uncle sam. Yes, that's right, if Johnny can't read he had a disability and can draw a disibility check for the rest of his life.

Sounds like some of you are just waking up to what's been going on for a very long time.

society has all so gone as far as to teach the younger generation to be yourself, do your own thing, dont let any one change your mind, and if they dont like to say to bad. I DONT CARE.
commom sence { I hope thats right} and concept
is not a part of their daily thinking and respect
whats that. When I was a patrolman in the eyes of some folks the uniform was all they needed to see and you were given the respect, but in the eye of others the badge did not mean a thing.
So yes it begins at home, while they are young .
My DAD all ways told me: SON SOME TIME IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO BUILD RESPECT,BUT A REAL SHORT TIME TO LOOSE IT.

I think it all comes back to what I perceive as the "removal of consequences".

Didn't graduate?....no problem. Here's a check.
Have a baby out of wedlock?......no problem. Here's two checks. (one for you and one for the baby. Unless of course you just want to kill the baby, and that's OK too.)
Can't feed your kids?....no problem. Here's a check.
Fried your brain with drugs?....no problem. Here's a check.
Can't afford a phone?....no problem. Here's a phone.
Invested your money poorly?....no problem. Here's a check.
Purchased a home you can't afford?....no problem. Here's a check.
Agreed to a contract your company can't honor?...no problem. Here's a check.
Break the law?....slight problem. Here's a slap on the wrist.

The list goes on and on........

There are natural consequence to all behaviors (poverty, hunger, homelessness, bankruptcy, and yes, even death - gasp, but some are good like wealth, health and prosperity), and this society has decided to remove those natural consequences (both good and bad). Then we shake our heads and wonder why people make poor choices.

probably no real point, just thinking on-line. As far as the idiot part, I think we"re all idiots, at one time or another :). Makes you wonder though with Edison, Tesla, and countless others who could barely function in society that had such a big impact on it.

I am the bad guy that started the discussion about HS drop outs. I am amazed by the numbers. 22% nationwide, 50% in major cities. These people have no chance to ever earn a decent living. (don't tell me about your granndfather in 1935). The result is(as you have noted) generations of unemployed getting checks from society. Read my original post. The national budget deficit that everyone screams about ...starts here.
Once they drop out of HS there is little chance that they will ever be able to carry their own weight.
But, they want the same things others have and that leads to crime. 75% of all crime is commmitted by HS drop outs.

My point is: until you fix this problem, you can not fix the federal deficit problem, the drug problem or the welfare problem. 22% of the population with no chance for a decent life is a recipe for disaster....guess what...it's here.

Edd, they don't get's checks from society. They don't get's checks "from the gov't" either because has no money of it's own. They get checks from taxpayers and that group is getting smaller and smaller and does not include all of our society. Only 63% percent of our working age population is even participating in the workforce. The so called 7.8% unemployment rate is really more 15-18% if you look at the U6 numbers that count people who have just given up looking. The plain fact is, we're in deep trouble and there's no easy way out.
