QUESTION TO ROYSE

Disconnect the grounding wire and re-connect the wire that goes to the F (field) terminal on the voltage regulator. If you get no charge at all on the ammeter, that means its time for a new voltage regulator. I suspect that will be the case, because otherwise they would not have bypassed the regulator by grounding the field.

It is encouraging that generator still works- voltage regulator is much less expensive than a generator rebuild.

there are two wires on the f terminal now, just disconnecting the ground will be ok? I will replace the voltage regulator...I have one on order now just in case

If the other wire runs between the regulator F terminal and the generator F terminal, yes, just remove the ground wire.

Im not Royse but until he gets here, The gennys FLD post wires EITHER to the FLD terminal on a Voltage Regulator (if it has one???) or the FLD wire connection on a Low/High light switch on systems that dont use a VR but instead a cutout relay and the light switch to regulate charge rate. If the gennys FLD is constantly grounded she can over charge, thats why either a VR or the low/high switch is used.

If a genny fails to charge but ONLY charges if its FLD is dead grounded, the problem is EITHER the VR is bad (if it has one),,,,,,,,, or the VR lacks a good frame ground (if it has a VR),,,,,,,,,,or if a light switch control system the switch isnt well grounded (that can happen easy),,,,,,or the wires missing from FLD on genny up to the switch

Below is my Troubleshooting Procedure if you need more. Royse can add to or correct this when he arrives.

If farmer Billy Bob grounded the field so she would charge, the VR (if it has one) was bad or not well groujnded or the low high switch was bad or not well grounded or the wire to it was open

well Mike I removed the ground wire and put a new battery in (old battery was bad)now when I start it the amp gauge does not register nothing maybe a negative 1.... I am guessing the VR is bad ... I ordered one and will have to wait until it arrives .. i did run the tractor for only two minutes can you think of anything else I can do while waiting... thanks again for all the help from everyone

Yep, sounds like voltage regulator. You can run it off the battery if you want, it won't hurt anything as long as you don't run the battery completely down. But may be best to wait, if you don't have anything pressing to do.

Hey Bob, I don't get to check in much at work, only on breaks.
Anyway, glad you found the problem.

Sounds like the guys have you covered as far as the fix.
As they said, it should wire to the field terminal of either the
VReg or the light switch depending on the system you have.

Since you said you have a new VReg on order, I assume that
you already have that type of setup.
Someone else mentioned it already, but make sure your VReg
has a good ground connection too. Clean all the rust and paint
off so it makes a good connection to the frame.

One last thought, if you just put in a new battery and it is fully
charged, it should NOT be charging much, if at all.
If the VReg is working correctly, it should sense that no charge
is needed and not try to overcharge the battery.

I finally got the VR and I am ready to install but I have one other question My battery is connected positive to positive and neg to neg. but on the VR is says positive ground. The tractor has been rewired and I don't know what to do should I change the battery to positive ground ??? I do not want to damage the VR if I leave it the way it is will the VR be ok? before the VR was grounded and I guess not used, do I have to rewire it starting all over to be sure. what I am trying to say is how do I know how the battery should be hooked up positive ground or neg ground. Is there and easy way to tell without rewiring...hope you understand what I am trying to say
