Whats the opinion om the John Deere 6400 fwd tractor, this one has the powerquad transmission , 1995 model , thining of buying instead of a Ford 7610 fwd with cavitation problems with the engine block .

You'll like it better than a 7610 by far. I've had one now for about ten years or so. It's used every day on a loader, used to bale, sometimes on a discbine, hauls silage wagons and has filled in on a two row chopper. It hauls hay, and feeds. I'd get another any day...

Ford has some pretty good tractors but few of them would stand up against a JD 6400. They are a solid tractor with a nice simple transmission. You also have a wet clutch which is real important for a loader tractor. My MFWD JD 6400 has over 16,000 hours on it. It gets used every single day.

No personal experience what so ever,so take it for what it's worth. A 95,you're probably OK if those with experience say so. They came out in 92 didn't they? All I'll tell you is something that was told to me by a friend who bought one for a loader tractor when they first came out. He told me he hated that tractor with a grand passion. Said it was in the shop more than it was on the farm. He said every time it was in,they brought him something else to use, including one time another 6400. He said the one they brought out was a whole different tractor. Said it just felt heavier all the way around, said even the fenders were thicker and heavier on it. So it led me to believe that they might have beefed them up a little after a while in to production.

Like I said, not my experience, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

rrlund: There where many different ways to order them when they came out new. There was a transmission difference, cast or steel rear wheels, higher capacity hydraulic pump, and different Selective control valves. The rear fenders stayed the same, the front fenders did change over the years.

If your friend got one stripped down it would have be way lighter than a dressed up one.

The SYNCROPLUS was 500 lbs lighter than the POWER QUAD. The rack and pinion wheels/castings added about 1500 lbs. Then then there where two front axle options too. The locking one is a good bit heavier too. Also the cheaper Selective control valves where nothing but JUNK.

As for there being model differences the wiring was improved. The JD 6410 had all of them pretty well resolved.

The production years did not make much differences. Mine is one of the first 500 ever built.

Of coarse there are some lemons of every model.
