Advice Removing Model L Transmission

Hi Folks,

My previous post had the wrong subject - sorry.

I'm a pretty competent mechanic, but I'm a bit apprehensive about pulling the transmission off my family's 1942 L. It's been in the family since it was new, but a few years ago it started to make a lot of noise sitting in neutral and running. Even was loud when in gear and driving, so I thought it must be a worn bearing in the transmission.

Any advice about pulling an L transmission would be great.

Best regards,
Kyle

They are just a simple transmission. I would get a tech manual just for the parts diagrams. Even just a cheap IT manual is good enough for the "L" JD.

The growling in neutral and in gear is more than likely the bearing between the input shaft and the tail shaft. Does it get quieter in high gear??? That has the shafts locked together.

Thanks JD,

I just wanted to be sure there wasn't something in the back of the transmission that might "fall off"into the differential. From what you say, I should be okay to pull it. And, I will be careful to note where the forks are located in neutral when I pull the shift control.

I plan on taking lots of picture because I wasn't blessed with a photographic memory. :)

Kyleonard62: I am not sure of what you mean when you say "pull the transmission". The differential and the transmission are all in a single case. The pinion shaft is part of the transmission. The is nothing to fall a part.

The transmission with drive gears is bolted on the front of the differential. I need to remove this to get to the worn bearings - correct?

Attached a picture of a used transmission and differential from an LA. The transmission can be separated from the differential by unbolting and "pulling" it forward I think.

Kyle,
A couple of years ago I had the same problem with my 38 L. I pulled the transmission and installed new bearings and replaced some of the gears that were chipped and pitted. Here is a link to some pics I took if that helps.

That joint is where the entire assembly comes apart. The ring and pinion is on that front half. You have to remove both final drives to get the transmission/differential section off of the rear end housing. The drive axles of the final drives stick into the differential.

This is not like a truck/car transmission where the two sections are separate with a splined coupler between them.

The transmission and differential are all in one housing.
