My usualy trouble free 95 Dodge Cummins just cliks sumthin in the fuse box , and will not crank ,, cleaned all posts and connections on batterys and chareged both batteries ,swapped around square breaker fuses , NUTHIN helps, same result , have not swapped out batteries , they are just one yr old... I have noticed over last 2 weeks that batteries seemed a little weak sometimes startin ,, btw the 1st set of batteries lasted for 7 yrs in this truk

Well I would check the battery voltage before I switched any batteries. Your slow starting could easily be a bad starter. You maybe lucky and it is just the starter solenoid that is just making bad contact.

So see what the voltage at the batteries is when setting and then when trying to crank. If the voltage is 12 volts before and bring trying to crank the batteries are not the problem. Then check to see what the voltage is at the starter before and during cranking. If you still have no drop or crank then check to see if your getting power to the wiring going to the starter solenoid when the key is in the crank position. IF you have voltage at the crank terminal then the trouble is in the starter.

Just blindly switching things around is just chasing your tail. CHECK the voltage and figure out what is not working before switching anything.

Thanx Jd ,...this is what happens ,, the battery charger reads full charge ,, and drops down to about half when I try to engage starter , it rebuilds charge in just a couple minutes ,All I get is a clik at the fuse box ..no connections seems to feel hot to touch,, ,,. btw.. it had a rebuilt starter from Auto Zone about 3 yrs ago

They have a starter relay on the inner fender and when the wires get corroded they wont crank. The previous owner of mine put a separate button to the starter when he couldn't figure it out.

Just replace starter in my superduty for same reason, been slowly getting worse, the wire from the solenoid on the starter to the starter motor was loose and has arced and made a mess of the solenoid terminal. Also the ground was bad between the starter and engine block.

Sounds like a bad relay or solenoid. The clicking you are hearing do you know what relay it is? Sometimes you can touch it when its clicking to find it. Also they can get warm also. If you find it, maybe switch anyone like it just to test if the other one has bad contact? Good luck with it.

I have put 4 starters on mine in 270000 mile and they all would get so they cranked slow then 1 day they would just not crank at all. If it is brushes in the starter a light tap on the side of the starter may start it 1 or 2 times.

You may be hearing the fuel shutoff solenoid pulling in (if you have the inline pump). It pulls in the same time as the starter the first time you turn to start position. The "run" winding is on until you turn key "off".
Probably a bad starter; I had to replace starter on my '06 cummins several times over the years. Also replaced the contacts once. But something happened in that one and solder melted out of the starter one day!
Troubleshoot first. Simple thing is turn in headlights and see of they go just a little dim or go out when you try to start. If they go out, you have a bad connection or weak batteries.

Jim, a battery charger isn't the same as a volt meter...OR a carbon pile load tester. Sounds like load-testing the batteries to see if you have a bad cell may be a good idea...since a lot of modern batteries are sealed, and you can't check the specific gravity of individual cells.

Turn head lights then hit starter if they dim or stay bright the problem is in starter circuit if hey go out out the you arenot getting the amperage from the batteries. Take a sharp knife and really clean the terminals down to frees metal. If you hear a crunching sound then that is the problem build up of hard corrosion that the wire brush won't clean out.

my 02 was doing about the same thing i got on top of a hill one day and had to shut it off no e-brake tried to crank it with the switch nothing so i turned on the key put it in fifth gear roll started it the computer didn"t like that at all turned out it was the starter

Use a small test light, and check every fuse in that fuse box. There are some fuses that control circuits that operate even larger fuses, don't make sense? Check every fuse, the batterys, the cables, then the hard parts, like starter.

Turn the headlights on and hit the key. If they dim...you have a bad battery...or a bad starter or cables. If not, it may be the starter contacts in the solenoid. Look at Genio's Gargage on the web...you will see them. The ones from the factory were small and caused problems.
