OK, this is getting to me. I was hoping someone had heard about this as a kid. I know darn well I didn't imagine it;
When I was well before a pre-teen I had heard that the nick name for the horse was 'Maggie'. I have been searching in vain but cannot find any other record of it. I had no inkling at the time but only learned recently that back in the 30s Mobil Oil bought the 'Magnolia Petrolium Company' whos logo was the flying red horse (AKA Maggie for Magnolia Petrolium?) and Mobil adopted the trade mark. I never knew where 'Maggie' came from but the story kind of made sense.

Would have thought the History Channel would have mentioned that at least once for all of those signs the picker guys have bought.

Funny you should mention it. That episode of American Pickers was exactly what got me thinking about the whole thing. As a kid I always wondered "why Maggie" and it was only lately I learned about Magnolia Petrolium. I presumed there was a link.

I've collected petroliana (fancy name for gas station junk) off and on for 30 years. I've never heard the flying horse called Maggie.
Some call the Pegasus (flying horse) Peggy.
What the pickers actually know about petroliana wouldn't fill a thimble.

I don't think the pickers write the stuff that's at the bottom of the screen from time to time. I'd think somebody would be researching that stuff pretty good. If it really did have a name,you'd think some researcher would have found out about it.

I hate that show.
Who knew buying junk could be so dramatic?
Just like what -could- happen to the Ice Road Truckers if about 3 dozen things went wrong exactly the right way and in the perfect order.

It's actually like watching a train wreck. I feel bad for these people they visit and how their lives turned into one of an obscession to collect garbage. More so for the ones with one foot in the grave and they just can't part with the stuff.
