Auger won't raise.

Last weekend I bought a Westfield MK 8x60 auger with a mechanical drive swing hopper on a consignment sale. I hooked it up to the JD 70 tonite, but it won't pick it up. It tries to, you can see the auger start to try to move and that's it. Unhooked and got the 1850 and changed it over to one way and tried it, same thing. Is there a safety lock on the auger that I'm missing that has to be released before it can be picked up? It has a 3/8 hose going to the cylinder and had a IH style coupler on it. Could it have a high pressure only cylinder on it? My brother has a similar auger and runs it with a 880 Oliver. Any ideas?? Thanks, Chris

We had a 13 X 70 Westfield that acted the same way since new if it was lowered all the way down. We used a loader to push it up a little as one guy lifted it with the hydraulics. After that we never let it down all the way, as it was just at the very lowest point that it gave trouble.

My 1086 lifts a Westfield 130-71 OK but when it's all the way down it'll hesitate and then pop up when I raise it. The only thing that comes to mind to make it hard lifting is the pulleys might be rusted in place. Every fall I take a squirt can and flood the top of the pulleys, hoping a little oil might make it into the right place. Jim

Chris, I'd try lifting up a couple feet to give the cylinder an easier angle to work with. My close friend and neighbor (35 yrs ago) had a hydraulic auger that did the same as LonM stated. needed to push it up about 2' before the cylinder would raise it

Don't take this the wrong way but there is a valve in the hose. I have seen them with the handle gone. Also did someone put your cylinder in upside down, with the shaft pointing up. A friend of mine, had his fill completely with water and corrode. He had to buy a new cylinder. He put the new one in facing down! Vic

Thanks for the reply's. The valve in the hydraulic line is open. I sprayed all the pulleys with Panther pee, The base of the cylinder is to the top. I'll try lifting it some with the loader to see if that helps. Thanks again, Chris

I have a Westfield 10x61 mechanical swing auger and my 60 or 70 both lift it easily. My 520 will but doesn't quite as easily. You will want your hydraulic reservoir about as full as you can get it to fully charge the lift cylinder. Normal "full" (to the petcock) is not enough oil. Mike
