Standard oil co

I had a delivery by this building in Deerfield mass its right near the railroad tracks and train yard look at the painted over lettering on the top of the building I thoght standard oil was broken up by the government a long time ago thought this was a nice piece Of history

That near the big RR yards? Seen it before. Standard Oil is still ESSO (S-O)in Canada and elsewhere, I think they started the EXXON name in the late 70's? more as a marketing thing. Same time the tigers, flying horses and dinosaurs disappeared..

IIRC, Standard was broken into a bunch of smaller companies, including Standard, Chevron, Esso, and a few others, much like AT&T when it was broken up.That's when Dutch Royal, BP and some offshore companies really ran fuel prices up. Your friendly gummint at work.....

The Standard Oil Trust was broken up in 1911 into several regional companies. Standard Oil Company of New York (SOCONY), Standard Oil Company of Ohio (SOHIO), Standard Oil Company of Indiana (which was simply known as Standard then later Amoco), Standard Oil Incorporated (Standard of Kentucky or KYSO), Continental Oil Company (Conoco), Standard Of California (Calso, Chevron), Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso then later Exxon). I'm sure there were others.

SOCONY merged with Vacuum Oil Company in the early 1930's to create SOCONY-Vacuum which eventually became Mobil.

It's strange that the government felt the need to break up the Standard Oil Trust over a 100 years ago and over time some of the regional Standard companies have merged. Mobil-Exxon is one example. Chevron and Kyso is another.

robably money & political favors earned at breakup & re-merging. Just as AT&T & the Bells....slowly but surely getting back together

Esso/Exxon was a different company but they have since merged with Mobil which evolved from SOCONY which is what that building is.
Standard of New Jersey started using the Exxon name around 1972. They had been marketing in different areas of the country under Esso, Enco, Oval E, Humble, Carter as well as using the names of regional companies they had purchased. They combined their marketing under the new Exxon name. Exxon did continue to use a tiger in their marketing.

Mobil switched from the familiar Pegasus logo to the "big red A-hole" logo in the mid sixties. In recent years they've used the pegasus in their marketing.

OH Well I clicked on your locator drop down and sure enough I saw Sinclair stations in NM AZ UT an CO. I sure don't remember seeing any on my trips. I remember here in TX they were all over the place.

Also remember TX had Humble and most rest of the country had ESSO. All though in TX the stations was Humble the gas was called Esso for reg and Esso Extra for Ethal then name was I believe was Enco and finally Exxon.

Maybe they're not in Texas but they have a strong presence in the west. I've driven from IL to CA saw Sinclair stations in every state on those trips. I notice stuff like that because I collect (among other things)Sinclair signs and gas pump globes.

Esso was forced to use the Enco name in some markets because the Esso name infringed on other Standard companies territories. The other Standards successfully used the argument that ESSO was the phonetic spelling of the letters S and O which they held the marketing rights to S O in their territories because the letters S O stood for Standard Oil.

(quoted from post at 23:42:32 09/18/13) Standard Oil Company of NY is better known as Mobil.
Actually SOCONY had no affiliation with the Mobil brand until SOCONY and Vacuum merged in 1931. S-V coupled Socony's shield logo and pegasus with Vacuum's Mobilgas trademark over the next few years.
The building pictured by the OP would pre date SOCONY's involvement with Mobil (Vacuum).

100% correct. Standard Oil just didn't own the right politicians.

Someone mentioned Sinclair. I had a memory for years of that big green dinosaur and no one I mentioned it to had any idea what I was talking about. I remembered it being in Glens Falls NY near the intersection of Rt 9 and Aviation road. Had the picture in my head for 40 years and no clue where I'd seen it. Then one day I happened on a website someplace and among the photos were several of that gas station right where I'd remembered it! You could see the old Sears Plaza in the background, another place that I had a lot of memories from.

At least I'm not nuts...in that area anyways!

Heard a news item this morning that five years after the recession (supposedly) ended poverty is up and home ownership is down. Good job, BHO!
