JI Case 730

I have a 1966 JI Case 730. I have a three point scissor type hydraulic bale spear. It will not lift 1400lb 5x5.5 round bales but a couple feet off the ground. It will lift the smaller 4x5 bales 8 to 9 feet in the air. I have been told it is lifting too far back for the larger bales and that Hay King makes a model 30-8 hydraulic spear that will lift the heavier bales. Anybody out there have any experience in this area.

I'm not a round bale guy,but 1400 lbs is a lot of wt for a 50 something horsepower tractor.Maybe the resone the 730 wont lift the bigger bales is they are over and above the lift capacity of the machine. My advise is to to use the smaller bale on your 730.Or use a bigger/heavier tractor for the bigger bales.

It is simple physics. That type of bale spear divides the available lift capacity of the tractor by a factor of 3 times or so in order to create the height. The working range of the 3 point is under 2 feet, in that range you can easily lift 4000#. Ask it to lift 6 feet, you would have to divide that capacity by 3, and these figures are in a perfect world.

Thanks for your reply. So if
your math is correct that
would put me at about 1333
lbs. That is just slightly
less than what I am
attempting to lift.
My question is do the
physics change with the
Hay King design? They are
telling me it will indeed lift
the larger bales but I would
like to hear from someone
with experience other than
the dealer.

This is theory, my numbers aren't firm. A healthy 730 should lift 4000#. It is almost 50 years old, lots of variables in its hydraulic system. Simply something to think about as to why it lifts the small ones, and not the large.

Those pumps wear over time, springs weaken, clearances increase. Overhauling the pump might help and that pump is about as easy to get at as it can get.

The thought of the pump
being worn also crossed
my mind. I am amazed at
how well it all still works
being 47 years old.
I'm going to do a fluid and
filter change first and see if
it helps. The fluid looks a
little cloudy. The manual
calls for 17 gallons of TCH
Fluid. Anybody have any
recommendations.
