O/T Michigan Small Game Opens: Anyone Going Out?

My wife is glad squirrel season is open. They get in the feeder all summer. I'm more generous; they don't bother me. But I do like fried squirrel too so I might sit out by the corn field for a while. Partridge are rare around me and woodcock is a week off. I won't shoot rabbits till we've had a good frost. Can't see 'em in the grass anyway.

Small game?? With the coyotes around here, there hardly ain"t any! Only saw a few ( less than 5) rabbits all hay season. No quail, pheasants, other small game. Only squirrels I"m seeing are laying dead in the road. Will probably try and get out for the special early doe season - the deer herd owes me a bunch this year.

use to eat squirrel when I was a kid. Was born near the end of the great depression but nobody told us that it was over. Since, I learned that they were Rats with a fuzzy tail, I quit eating em. We don't have seasons on rabbit or squirrel,or rattle sanakes, can kill them anytime.

Deer archery opened today in MO. I don't expect to find time for that. Rabbit opens Oct 1 but rabbit population has been in decline for the past few years (read too many predators. Nov 1 Pheasant/Quail opens, I'll be out there with my dog and grandsons. Rare to see a pheasant in our area anymore and quail numbers are down too (again read too many predators). I am building brush piles as I get firewood but there are so many Owls, coons, coyotes and fox. Need more trappers, but I understand why there isn't more of them.

As Korn said bow season for deer opened here in Missouri today but way to hot out to go hunting plus I have hay down and they are calling for rain tonight and tomorrow so need to get it baled up later this afternoon. Just got done raking it

Off the 2nd week of Oct for bird. Two friends come with me. One guy and I chase bird with my German Shorthair. Other guy, bird in the morning and deer in evening. Harrison/Gladwin area. Might actually get some seat time on the 3600 clearing a little more lakefront.

Won"t head out for small game until Oct 1, when my dad and I go hunting together. Need to wait til Oct 1 as he is bowhunting.

Squirrel in a crock pot with onions, don"t get much better.

Pat Sublett;

You in Kansas? Took my beagles along to a birddog gathering to run after the dog work. Our host lived in Larnard. He went with me on a run and when the beagles started their bawl, he said, "If those were my dogs I'd wonder what the he11 was wrong with them."

I have quite a few rabbits but I spend a lot of time working on habitat: brush piles, cutting to regenerate young growth, mostly aspen, and food plots geared more toward rabbits. I plant cowpeas, corn, grain sorghum, millet and this year oats. Deer and turkeys also use those foods.
