O.K. Help me out , last year we did the Durango to Silvertown train ride. Heading into that area again last two weeks of Sept. Have looked at the Cumbres/Toltec ride and the Rio Grande ride at Alamosa. Anyone on here that has a favorite or reason I should do one over the other. Time or cost are not a factor just views and entertainment.

David we were there like 20th of Oct last year. We were told that things pretty much shut down for the season around the end of Oct so moved it up a little this year. Plan on going to Bryce and spending some time up in Northern Utah so wanted to beat the cold weather. Who know what it will be. Going by a buddies place in Casa Grande Ar. and I know it is still hot down south.

The train ride from Canon City, CO is short, but we sure did enjoy it. It goes up the Royal Gorge.
You can do the Dinner or just the ride.

That being short was what stood out to me but looked like some real scenery. We did the Durango to Silvertown up & back and it was a full day. Lots of folks bus back one way. May just do both looks like I can work it in.

I always gravitate to the http://www.cumbrestoltec.com/, mostly because it seems to bring more of the feeling of 'days gone by'....... but, that's just me :)

We took our first trip to Colorado last Oct. Denver, Pike"s Peak, Colorado Springs, Manitou, Royal Gorge, and the Durango/Silverton ride. Wonderful time, but I"m satisfied I"ve seen enough rocks to last a lifetime. Don"t know about the other two train options. Was at a cousin"s funeral yesterday, found out 3 of her siblings live in Colo Springs, we drove within a mile of the house of one. Had no idea any lived there!

jm, Family did the Chama NM, to Ananita, Colo. Route a few yrs ago, was a blast to see the old engins run, and the mountains too.
The day we rode they pulled a Double Header on the first leg of the route. Steepest grade, after we broke the summit they cut loose the lead engine and we went on with one.
Also the Cumbers-Toltec train , and route was used in the Movie "Where the Hells that Gold" with Willie Nelson, Jack Elam, Delta Burk!
My Son, F-I-L, and Myself rode on the rear platform of the first car and front platform of the second car the whole way! Had really good view of engine from the rear and the countryside!
My wife and M-I-L sat just inside on the # 2 car.
They serve a lunch at noon-ish, midway point. Sandwichs, Chips and a Coke, I think. At Ananita Colo. We rode the Bus back to Chama! If you want to pay more I think you can ride the train back. The Chama NM. Start, run gets my vote!
Hope this helps.

Thanks John , we were leaning that way. Hope the floods and fire do not make this trip a disaster.

Ive been on the Durango and the Georgetown loop, not the Cumbres, buttttttttt saw a video of it and it looks great and plan to take it next year when we (Senior Citizens) take another National Park RV tour (to the dismay of some here lol but were doing it anyway, get over it)

I encourage young and old alike to visit The National Parks, Americas Best Idea........

John Thanks , I am sure we will, I have plans to spend about 4/5 days there in the area.

Both Bryce and Zion (A place of peace and tranquility) have the nice free shuttle bus service that roams the park and stop by the main lookout points for on and off most of the day, sure beats driving n parking. The bus stops at historic Rubys Inn just outside of Bryce if you decide to stay there. Since its past labor day crowds arent near as bad. In Zion dont miss the Temple of Zimbabwe (spelling???) and the foot trail from there up the canyon. The Grand Canyon isnt all that far south of there ya know hmmmmmmmm Last year we did "The Grand Five" in southern Utah, Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Old n young alike, visit the National Parks, Americas Best Idea

We have done the Cumbres & Toltec ride a couple of times riding from Antonito to Chama , and Chama to Antonito. They are like two different rides. The scenery is great, its like turning the clock back a hundred or more years.

There is no need for reservations. The two trains meet approxamately at the half way point for lunch which is included in the price of your ticket. Its a first rate meal too.

We hope to get the opportunity to ride it again before we get too old.
