O/T Any ideas what this is?

Have a couple of these flying around the petunia patch sucking up something out of them. Looks kinda like a cross between a hummingbird and a moth. Wings look about the same and hovers just like a hummingbird. Probably about 2" to 2 1/2" in length. If you look close, you can see the tongue or whatever it is taking nectar I'm guessing. Now I know why the pointer has been going crazy by the fence surrounding the patch the last few days.

It's a Hummingbird Moth. Check out the link for a little more info on them. Saw one a few years back hovering over a puddle of water in a customers quarry, first one I had ever seen. Now that I know what to look for I've seen several more sense around flowers, etc. Beautiful, as well as unique insects, to say the least.

I see lots of them in the spring right at dusk on the lilac blooms. Don't see too many later in the summer here in Idaho.

Mothra. Just killing time with your flowers, waiting for her next encounter with Godzilla. They both live for this stuff.

I thought they were what tomato worms turn into, but I could be wrong. Seems like I read that in an insect book. I've seen them in the garden.
