O/T Seat Belt Enforcement Zone

I live two miles from the post office. Had to mail a letter that needed weighing so that's why I went. Passed a sheriff deputy and didn't think much about it. Passed another at the restaurant. Just as I pull over to the P.O. I see the lights. Nice guy but still wrote me a ticket--$65.00. I explained I wear my seatbelt 99.9% of the time, which is true. Didn't help. Wrong place at wrong time.

Go to the D.A. and tell him that it is a rare situation, that you forget to put it on. He might agree and toss it out. Worked for me once.

I got a seatbelt ticket a while back . He said there is no warnings for the seatbelt , they have to right a ticket . I am in Indiana and it cost 5 bucks .

its a $50.00 ticket here in Wyo. all it is a reason to pull you over and harass you they could care less if you die in a accident that's my opinion anyway I do use belts on the highway BUT that's MY decision hate the "MAN" into my business
cnt

Here in Wisconsin they caved in to the federal governments blackmail and passed seatbelt laWS BUT at the time they said that it WOULD NOT be a "primary enforcement statute " or,that you would NOT be pulled over just because of not having a seat belt on.recently though it has been changed and now a driver can be stopped just for not using a seatbelt. So much for promices

You haven't lived until a state trooper pulls you over when you're wearing a seat belt and wastes 15 minutes of your life trying to convince you that you weren't. Trooper Holier Than Thou so kindly let me go after a wonderful lecture and "giving me the benefit of the doubt this time".

I always wear a seat belt, and it didn't take insurance industry lobbyists that buy lawmakers to convince me it is a good idea to wear it. If others choose not to, it is their choice. A law to force people to wear it is simply a revenue enhancing statute that satisfies the lobbyists and adds to the local coffers.

The more I read about these things the more I am convinced that I need a dash cam with an additional passenger compartment cam to protect myself from the people that we have hired to protect me.

I got a seat belt ticket a couple months back way out in the boonies on a lonely country road no veh in sight for 20 ml but that darn cop in a unmarked veh sitting on a field aproach.I hadn't seen a cop in these parts for 15 years.
I mentioned to that cocky small puncture wound after he wrote me the $125 ticket ,.if you that bored i can offer you a job shoveling chit.

That remark almost got me another ticket :)

I had that happen to me in Crofton, MD once. I pointed out to the cop, that there has been one death, on Crofton parkway, and that was a bicyclist who had a heart attack, and and rear ended a parked car! Didn't work, went to court in February, and brought the newspaper clipping of the donut store being robbed while I was getting the ticket. That didn't work, but got the judge laughing, and $30 off the $ 75 fine!

First of all you were lucky finding a post office...I spent two weeks in America casually looking for one! then finally gave up and asked a post man for directions. Our post offices are in gas filling stations....We all do things different!
We also have to wear seat belts by law, penalty points and a fine if you don't
Local plumber was driving through town in his work van when he was flashed(photographed) inside the 30mph zone. He was positive he was not doing 30 and got mad and turned around and drove past the same camera....at 25mph and got flashed again...thought he would be real smart and drove past again at 20mph this time....flashed again. So he decided to file a complaint. They had 3 clear photographs of him driving in town ....WITHOUT A SEATBELT!.....9 penalty points and a fine. (12 penalty points = no licence)

Look at seat belt crap this way, it really bodes well for society. It must mean all "real crime" is stopped and solved. No more murders or anything apparently if they have time to worry about seat belts. Ha, ha, ha!

It's a habit forming thing, if you automatically buckle when getting in car you won't forget regardless of trip length. My great aunt was killed at low speed in city, no seat beat got ejected sideways and hit head. My father and I were saved by seat belts - hit head on by drunk driver in a vehicle 2x the weight of ours. Closing speed was about 80-100 mph between the vehicles. I won't say it was fun but we are both alive.

It's all about revenue. They couldn't care less about safety, if they did every sub compact and motorcycle would be off the road. I've lost all respect for the traffic police AKA tax collectors. I would bet the most seatbelt tickets are issued to middle aged white men. We may wear them less but we are also the most likely to have the means to pay the ticket and less time to fight it. I really believe if there was enough support the seatbelt law violates the constitution.

not seat belt but cop related - neighbor was out in the pature putting in new fence when he gets a call for the police that cattle are out and near I35. So he jumps in the turck and runs over there (about 2 miles away). They get the catlle back in and then the cop wants to see his drivers license. Well he didn't have and explained how he was in the filed working and came as quickly as he could without hinking about it. Cop let him go after a warning - now why would the cop ask for his license anyway?

It is all about money, the insurance companies love it because they can charge you more if you get points. The towns love it because they get the fine monies, the cops love it because it pads their ticket writing stats. If they really cared about safety they would have "How to drive" infomercials on TV every night. I ran a body shop for years and have seen both sides of seat belt safety. Some it helped, others not so much. Had one woman that got hit broad-side. She saw it coming and dove for the passenger seat. Drivers door crushed all the way to the console. She had minor injuries. If she was belted she would be dead. Cop responding to the crash wrote her a ticket for not wearing her belt. I offered to be a witness if she took it to court. Don't know if she fought it. But that just doesn't make sense.

I always wear my seat belt. It helps keep me lined up with
the steering wheel so I can steer with my knee.
If I get out of line I have to put down either my cell phone or
my grande caramel latte to correct the steering. Annoying. ;)

I have been wearing my seat belt for about 45 years and I feel uncomfortable without it. Many people need their own personal experience to convince them to change habits. fatalities due to lack of seat belts helps to clean up the gene pool.

In Louisiana the fine is $25 for 1st offence; $50 for second offence; $75 for 3rd offence and so on.

I have gotten one ticket but have come very close to getting a couple more.

Always see state troopers standing on the shoulder of the road in a curve such as interstate on and off ramps.
Surprised none have been run over from some idiot that comes flying around the curve; driving with his knee; and trying to put the belt on before the cop looks his way.

I too can credit my life to wearing a seatbelt when I was hit at a closing rate well over 100 MPH by an idiot who lost control of his car ((((while passing a woman in a no passing zone, in an S curve, in the rain))) and crossed the center line, hitting me head on with the passanger side of his car. He was airlifted and they thought he was going to die, I walked away with a seatbelt bruise.

Thing is the statistics can't be counted on to be correct. I mean when I was in a single vehicle accident (well, two vehicles, me and the car I was towing...towed car hit concrete in the road as I entered a turn and took me with it). I wasn't hurt a bit, and wasn't wearing a seatbelt.....but do you think I was going to tell the cop I wasn't wearing it when asked and get a ticket for that??? Not going to happen. So, at least one of the statistics of someone 'saved' by wearing their seatbelt in a wreck is wrong......No telling how many more are the same way...

Here it costs us $25 just to disput a ticket

they did that in every State, started out they couldn't stop you for no seat belt, let a few years go by, then changed it. A deliberate deception.

was riding with my employe-friend here in wis. to a thesheree, pulled me over for speeding (warning), got my friend for not wearing a seat belt ($10)and me for not making my friend put his seat belt on ($10). on the way home I told him I couldn't beleave I got fined for him not wearing a seat belt, he reached into his wallet and gave me $10

On July 17th 2012 I fell asleep while driving home from work one evening about 5:15pm. 2007 GMC Texas Edition 1/2 ton w/ approx 106K miles. I almost perfect condition, I was planing on driving it another 5 yrs. I had cruise control set at posted speed limit of 65 mph, went off road on right side into a pretty steep ditch and hit a culvert that thankfully had the pipes across it. Truck launched into the air, flew all the way over county road and clear corner posts of cattle pasture, I figure I flew at least 70 feet, came down on the side and rolled 4-6 times the TDPS Trooper said. Totaled truck, I had a few small scratches on he top of my head and a real bad seat belt bruise across my left shoulder. The VFD had to cut the roof off to get me out, at that time I had had 3 surgeries on my neck and 3 on my lower back. After x-raying my neck the Dr. gace me a small Rx for pain pills and told me to go home. I walked out of the Emergency room. I believe in wearing seat belts!!!

I'm going to get nailed one day.

I used to drive a gas tanker, was company rules to wear them . but I didn't .

I spent more time looking for places, as I drove (mostly the same runs) , to safety get rid of the truck if needed. I wasn't going down with the ship.

Never liked the idea of having my butt strapped to a large stick of dynamite. and is was worse when empty.

That ain't 'nuttin', I once watched my Dad (a govt safety engr) click his seatbelt ON to back outta the house garage. Gitt outt and pull the garage door down. I was waiting to follow him to Church. ........ the amazed Dell

As a guy who spent over 20 years as a ticket writing small puncture wound I'd like to correct a few things and offer a tiny bit of insight.

1- No, the majority of seat belt tickets aren't handed out to middle aged white guys. They appear to be handed out to young males, mostly mouthy young males. A lot of them go to people who got stopped for something else in the first place IME. Given the choice between a ticket for 78 in a 55 or a seat belt, which would you want?

2- No, cops don't enjoy having to go out and write tickets when they have piles of paperwork waiting to be done related to burglaries, drug arrests, domestics, accidents, etc. But, the bean counters demand proof the cop is doing his job and the only thing they consider "proof" is a certain number of tickets in a variety of categories.

3- Yes, cops really, really do care about safety. I've held mothers and fathers, husbands and wives who I've just told their loved one was dead. I watched my own mother mentally die and become a different person after my sister was killed in a DWI accident that she'd have lived through had she been wearing a belt. I've attempted to save the life of a toddler that hit the windshield because dad was "just going down to the store". I was unsuccessful BTW. Seat belts DO save lives. My father was killed in a roll over accident because of no belt, You could have driven the truck away. So don't give me that crap about it all being a revenue generator. That's part of it, but it's a small part.

4- A lot of our guys have been hit by drivers as they were on the side of the road. I knew 2 I think that are dead because of it. I had a little old lady, very sweet woman, hit the note book hanging out of my hip pocket as I spoke to a driver in another vehicle on the side of the road. I stopped her and she told me that frankly she thought I'd give her a ticket if she pulled across the center marker. Crazy, eh?

5- I hear crazy stories about thing cops do all the time. I can't answer for every guy that asks for a drivers license in a cow field or allegedly does something else inane. Neither can answer for the citizens that does something equally or more stupid. People are people and that's just life.`

6- Here in my state when we had a big seat belt push they would have us go out and do road blocks. Well before the road block there would be signs plainly stating "SEAT BELT CHECK AHEAD". I have seen people pull up to the check with no seat belt after passing 3 signs warning them and sitting in a line for at least several moments observing the check. Keeping Darwin in mind, what would you do?

And now the other side of the coin. My friends daughter had just gotten engaged. She was followed into the small town gas station by our local sheriff and ticketed. She just drove across the street. The law was the law. A she went back to work "belted" she got t-boned by a drunk speeding. The seat belt was so tight she died right there. It would have been more humane if he would have shot her.

If your not going to wear your seat belt at least have the courtesy to die in the crash. To many who refuse to wear their belt end up as droolers and force the rest of us to pay for their care though either higher insurance rates or government handouts.

I 100% agree seat belts do save lives. But I also think it should be a personal choice if you want to put your life in danger, not the governments. After all, isn't it a free country of choice?

In KY there is a mandatory seat belt law, but if you ride a motorcycle, helmets are optional. Makes sense??? I really think it comes down to the gov. doesn't want to pay disability $$ to those who survived a car crash, but can't fully function afterwards. On a motorcycle, if you wear a helmet, you might survive a crash but need disability $. If you don't wear a helmet, you're probably dead so no payment needed.

I personally don't have a problem with seat belts, however, for anyone in the front seat(s), it should be a personal choice. If you're sitting in the back seat without a seatbelt, you risk causing injury to the person infront of you.

Then there's the crazies who go beyond saying that it's unconstitutional to force you to wear your belt, and claim that they can cut you in half. They're out there, infact there's one on this forum.

well the seatbelt may be the greatest thing ever but i am still here for not wearing one, my car looked like it went through the local crusher and if i hadn't got thrown out it would have mashed me with it, so you can do what you want but it is not a guarantee that you will live with the seatbelt on or off that is the chance you take when you enter the highways. Got told once at a license check if I would buckle the seat belt i could move on, put the truck in park and told him we would be here all night and had to explain why and was told to "be careful and good luck".

That was priceless Dave!

Wearing seatbelts is absolutely a good idea.
It's also none of big brother's business. I pay the exorbitant health insurance premiums too so spare me the bs about not wearing belts costing everyone money. Freedom ain't free!

I have a relative that travels through New Hampshire often. He says in NH they only require minors to wear seatbelts. They figure adults can make their own decisions.

As for the police.... Just like any other profession there are good and bad. And like any other profession you're more likely to hear about the bad rather than the good.

Sometimes there are exceptions to the seatbelt laws. Someone that is prospecting (making frequent stops to talk to potential customers) or making deliveries are exempt in some cases.

Every year the Scheid diesel extravaganza is held at the Terre Haute fairgrounds. Each year it gets bigger. Each year there is a record number of tickets handed out. Seat belts is one of them. There are a record numbers of state, local, city and excise cops.

So when you come to this event, buckle up. I think our officials like the stimulas money, tickets, to boost our local economy.

Is there a law about diesels blowing black smoke? They could set a world record if there was.

Well stated!!!

I decided that I, and all my passengers would wear seat belts a very long time ago, and I doubt that I have gone a total of 5 miles without my seat belt on since that time.

A friend of mine started chasing a stolen car down a straight, rural road one night. For some unknown reason, he decided to pull alongside the stolen car in the Ford Torino patrol car he was driving. The driver of the stolen car steered into the side of the patrol car and forced it off the road into a large pine tree. The pine tree didn"t give much at all, and the cars had probably been doing about 100mph. I never heard if the stolen car was recovered later or if an arrest was made, but that was really all that important.

What was remarkable was that my friend survived the accident, and in fact he was back to work a couple of nights later. The front of the Torino was smashed back to the windshield, and the engine and transmission went under the vehicle. The doors all jammed shut, but my friend rolled down the window, unbuckled his seat belt/shoulder harness, and climbed out the open window. When other officers got there, my friend was standing by the destroyed patrol car.

My friend always said that it was the seat belt that saved his life. Without it securing him, at the least, he would have hit the steering wheel hard and his legs might have been broken hitting the dash. At worst, he might have been ejected or killed by the horrific impact. Instead, he walked away with only some "soft tissue injuries".

That incident made a big impression on me. Before that, I had worn the seat belt some of the time, but was bothered by it interfering with all the junk we carried on our belts, and also for the confinement. My attitude changed, and I DECIDED THAT I WOULD NOT DRIVE OR RIDE WITHOUT A SEAT BELT ON.

If you get into a situation where you NEED a seat belt, usually there is no time to put one on. The only way to be ready is to get in the habit of automatically putting the seat belt on whenever you get in the vehicle.

I wear my seat belt for ME and my family, not because of some law. In my opinion, it is real STUPID not to wear a seat belt, and if giving tickets is the only way to get people to wear seat belts, then maybe that is what needs to be done.

The majority of people who get thrown out of a car or truck die .Back in the early 60s a fellow slid off the road into some brush died when his door opened. He got caught between the rear door and a 3 inch maple tree.

(quoted from post at 02:22:30 09/12/13) It is all about money, the insurance companies love it because they can charge you more if you get points.

Trust me we don't care, that's just the way the rating system works, the more risky you act, the more you pay. Increase in premium washed out with higher claim payments. No, not on the individual basis, on the larger group of insureds. Law of large numbers and all that.

jon,

I'm all for personal responsibility, and social awareness,

I balk at the gov't telling every aspect of every life, though.
