Over the years we've had people steal our CC info and charge stuff, usually online. CC companies close the account, send us new cards and we've never had to pay a nickel. It's the people who sold the merchandise who get stuck with the tab as the CC companies reverse the payment of funds.

The fraud detection is pretty good these days. I once got a call from a CC rep saying my card was being used right then at a jewelry store in CA. My wife was at a conference in the city and was buying a souvenir. Couple of months ago was getting into my car after buying gas near Mackinac Island, couple of hundred miles from home. Before I was even in the car, wife was getting a text message from the CC company checking for fraud use.

Well, last nite, there was a new twist. I got a voice mail from one of our CC companies about fraud alert. Yelled upstairs to ask the wife if she was buying anything online, answer was no. Called the company and they asked if I had changed my address the day before? Nooooo. Did you change your phone number? Noooo. Did you buy a bunch of Karaoke equipment the same day? Nooooo.

Uh, oh. They changed everything back, added a password to the account, will get new cards, they'll disallow any transactions that come through. The rep said they tried to open a Paypal account with the card also.

Also put a 90day fraud alert with the 3 Credit Reporting Agencies and got a free Credit report (still clean and green).

When the rep asked if she could do anything else for me, I said "Yeah, execute the people responsible". She said "Uh, we DO prosecute to the full extent of the law". I offered to supply the ammo and pull the trigger. Wife listening on the extension was NOT pleased.

Thats unreal. Its incredible how those in society, that steal are so numerous. I blame all the complications with things that need protection, from a website where you are applying for a job, banking and all the rest, if it were not for these kinds of people, the lives of honest working people would be so much better, even if regarding just isolated incidences.

Years ago, while construction was at an all time low, I took a retail job selling consumer electronics, audio and video equipment, high end sound systems, TV's etc. I used to ring up all my own sales to close out the sale immediately, to avoid customers changing their mind while in line, and it was their prerogative to do so. I sold in an honest way, showed them up or down on the line closest to what they wanted to spend and I had a lot of success doing so.

At the end of the day, we retained the pink copy of the sales receipt, on it, was the entire credit card number, customers address etc. expiration date, and so on. I had stacks of these, with that information. Could you imagine the havoc someone could cause today with that, I burned them years later in my burn barrel at home, some of the CC #s were still valid too. I know there are those who handle transactions who have this same information today, but back then this was not widespread like it is today.

I agree with the punishment, would never stop people from continuing to do it, as its a human thing to be utterly and completely stupid such as some people are, those that steal.

I know how mad it makes a person in these matters BUT Be careful what you say most these calls are recorded and monitored

I've been called back by law enforcement, years ago having wallowed on the border of terroristic threats to people that deserve it, really rattles their cage, no its not worth the trouble by any means but if you know the law, you can seriously disturb some of these jerks. I tracked malware or similar to double click, .com one day, I then found a way to directly contact them, and I said what I felt, right on the border, but not over. KNOW THE LAW first, and I don't recommend anyone to do this, just sharing my experience. My pc was taken down by this, and it was part of my business, so I felt it was very necessary to harass these people in an aggressive but intelligent manner, it worked like a charm, I received a phone call from a detective working out of the Manhattan D.A.'s office. He could not do anything about it, I got my point across abundantly clear, so much it really disturbed the person on the other end. It was funny, as I had the detective totally snowballed on my whereabouts, no way he could find me anyway, at that point, but being cooperative, our conversation ended the situation, and he did have an understanding as to why the situation occurred. I don't take crap from people, and if it takes me a year to fire back at you, I will every time, regardless.

The most recent situation is those jerks that fax things to you, waste your paper, toner, and in my home office here, the darned thing goes off at 3am with some useless solicitation for quick books or some trip to award or some financial offer etc. Do not call list means nothing to these people. I finally got a hold of someone, and told them this is a direct violation of FCC rules/laws and that I am pursuing prosecution, have retained an attorney, notified authorities whom are immediately commencing an investigation etc. Talk about back peddling, yet they persist, they break laws, sometimes you have to fire back in a certain manner to get results, even if it bounds the threshold of the law.

well, my daughter (attorney) advised the same thing but..... the lady asked me if she could do anything else for me. I just answered her question. :) Now, if someone at the company went out and shot the perp, would I be responsible? I would think even a lawyer right out of law school could get me out of that.

Last year,(2012), we made a long trip to Arkansas
and Missouri, even stopped to see "Old". When
we got home we had half a dozen e-mails from our
credit union, that our card was being used, "out
of state" They wanted us to notify them, in
the future, about going on trips ! I"m somewhat
concerned that "Big Brother" is tracking me !

I always thought the best way to stop identity theft would be if the person whose identity was stolen could select the identity thief's punishment, up to and including the death penalty.

Dont use credit cards. No cash dont buy.Saves a lot of trouble.Credit cards must be a disease.Have a friend who has to be making payments all the time.

Thankfully, I've never had my information stolen, but the protection thing can be a double edged sword. I was traveling back to KS from CA and stopped for gas in CO at 8:00 in the AM on a Sunday. The CC/Debit Card was declined. We were driving straight through, so we had gassed up in CA, UT, and then CO all within 12-18 hours of each other. I undertand the suspicion, but if we hadn't had cash, we would have been stuck. There wasn't anyone at the bank to call at 8:00 AM on a Sunday morning either. We had even told them about the trip in advance, and it still got shut down. I was just thankful we had enough cash to buy gas and food to make it home!
