John Deere Model M

I"m new to all of this. But I had a John Deere Model M tractor given to me handed down from a good neighbor because I used to ride and drive with him when I was a kid 30 some years ago. My question is the serial number plate has been taken off and I"m wondering if there is any other way to find out the year. I know they only made them from 1947 to 1952.Any help will be appreciated. My plans are to restore this beauty to it"s original state. Thanks

John Deere did not put the serial number any where else. So enjoy your tractor, and remember the neighbor that gave it to you. Happy Driving.

Read an article several years ago in Two Cylinder magazine about deciphering the casting codes on the major parts. I can't remember how it went now but it seems like the last digit which is a letter denotes the year. IF I'm thinking right 47 would be A, 48 would be B, 49 would be C, etc. I've never checked any but my two 49's & they are C.

There were several things that changed over the years that can be used to narrow it down if you know what to look for. Course that's assuming these parts weren't changed and lots were. Have fun with the M.

Am not familuar with that model. On my A the tag was unreadable. By taking the parts book and going over it on everything I could I got my tractor narrowed down to being a 51 model. Simple things like the type of oil filler cap and other items.
