OT—Best place to order Troybult tiller parts?

I just inherited a TroyBult Econo Horse tiller that's been sitting for several years. I was told it ran good when parked but it does have an oil leak. I haven't looked at it real close yet but I suspect a seal or two will be in order here soon.

I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on who to order parts from for this tiller.

There are a bunch of listings for parts on Ebay. Do a search for your model, you'll see the listings. I have seen on the web a few small engine sites, some specifically servicing these tillers, do a google search and see what comes up.

Get the serial number and have it handy, then go onto the MTD website, look your model up, use the serial number, its on a flat spot on top of the trans, older ones on the right, stamped by hand. There are quite a few parts available for these. Suprisingly so, these seem to be fairly well supported. Years back I could go over the the hill and down to the factory get anything for these.

Believe it or not, I also found parts listing on of all places, Sears, Parts direct, check there too, the website, I still could not believe that these were listed there, can't make the connection, but I did see it as so.

I've ordered the axles seals on Ebay. The problem you can run into is if the axles have much wear they'll leak even with new seals - the only way to stop the leak 100% is replace the axle shafts. I polished mine up a little before installing the seals and haven't had any issues.

I don't know if they still do but Sears was selling Troybuilt tillers at one time. I remember seeing them in their stores. It was after they sold out to MTD and went downhill.
I have been able to get parts on line too for my old Troybuilt Horse model.

I kept fighting tiller shaft oil seals on ours.
Finally had the shaft built up with spray weld. It must be alot harder as it has held up better since then.
The seals were just common seals you can find by measureing them or the part number on the old ones.

The leak may be under the tine holders. You can remove the holder and tines as an assembly. They have a 1/2" bolt about 6 inches long that needs to be removed. Do a search for Troy Bilt parts in your area. You may need the model number of your tiller. I installed new seals on mine back in 2006. Hal
PS: I paid $100.00 for it and sold the Tecumseh engine for $65.00. Bought the 10 hp engine from smallenginewarehouse.

Dave,
www.partstree.com is great way to look up parts. Click on Troy-Built and then search for your tiller model. A parts diagram will come which helps when working on unit, gives you part number you need, and gives you option to buy part from Parts Tree on line.

If you have a Cub Cadet near you, check as some of them are also Troy Built Dealer.

Advice already given to match up seals at parts store is also very good.

If you are like me a print of parts diagram found on Parts Tree would be good to keep on file as very helpful when working on unit.

Good luck, Bill

Lots of times the seals are still good. Just need to pull axle shafts and clean out grass that has found its way in there and wound around the seal area.
