OT: 99 Dodge deisel problems

5.9 Cummins started getting sluggish a few weeks ago. Put a new lift pump on it and new filter. Sometimes it will run like a scaulded dog like when it was new. Other times, it acts very sluggish again.
I have 17 PSI at the filter at idle. Can't check it at full pull.
Injector pump was replaced several years ago. It is a farm truck, not a souped up hot rod. I have about spent all the money I can on it right now.
Any suggestions?

Any codes ? The 99 needs a code reader plugged into the obd port under the dash. Any auto parts store can and will lend you a reader for free or a small rental fee. You need a fuel pressure gauge with these vp-44 powered Cummins trucks. Also, you need a better lift pump as the stockers are JUNK !! I know you said your done throwing money into it but you why spend $1000 for a new vp if you don't have too !!! Get a better lift pump and fuel pressure gauge ASAP. Check into Diesel Auto Power for lift pump and gauge kits. Google them. Very good prices too. Stay away from Airdog. I'd go with a FASS pump and a Isspro gauge and use air brake line with a needle valve as to not damage your gauge from water hammer from the vp. You can connect your gauge line onto the fuel filter canister also. Google Mopar1973man website. That guy is a Dodge Cummins Guru for sure. Tons of info on there. Sounds like your low on fuel pressure at WOT. Good luck. I have a 02 Cummins and it has a good lift pump and gauge set at 20 psi.

The folks at Diesel Power on White Horse Rd. are good on those..Had a rebuilt VP44 and the big FASS pump with dual filters installed, then got bad fuel and had new injectors installed. The new injectors give a lot more power.

Just got back from town. Computer code showed a bad MAP sensor. Got one coming at 4:30. The guy read it and called a diesel mechanic and he agreed the sensor should fix it. The mechanic unplugged it showing me how to put it on and since he plugged it back up, it has been running great. Still gonna put one on this evening.
Those guys in Greenville are very good. We have used them on farm equipment.

I just got the new one put on.
It is right behind the filter on my 99. Just above the lift pump. As with most stuff, a real pain to get to, but I got it done. My neck is killing me.
So far so good on it running.

PS: 1 1/4 inch socket to take it off. The one I put on was 1 1/8 socket.

Bosch says they will work as low as 3 psi. Anything over 15 is wasted anyway. There is a bypass in the inj. pump so it is just going back to the tank at 20.

The higher pressure is necessary for long life. Unless the pressure is kept high enough to keep flowing through the bypass the fuel pump can get overheated and cause the electronics in the pump to fail.

Had a diesel mechanic tell me last week to always keep at least a half tank of fuel. It cools the bypassed fuel down and keeps heat from ruining the lift and injector pumps.
