O/T Fond childhood memories

Was talking with the wife last night about what things were like back when we were kids. One of my childhood memories came back of Full Service gas stations. What happened to those? Are they a thing of the past? The last one i can recall here in Iowa was a Texaco station that has been closed up since 2001. They would pump the gas, check tire pressures, and clean all the windows. Any in your area yet?

A full service station here in Omaha ,Ne. has been a thing of the past for quite awhile. Do you also remember gas wars between stations or S&H Green Stamps that gas stations used to give away ?
Have a great day and you are correct in saying this is a fond childhood memory.

There was a pretty good discussion of full service stations on here a day or so ago- its in about the middle of Page 2 on classic, heaven knows where on Modern- they do jump around a bit on Modern.

as far as I know - all gas stations in NJ are full service - due to some kind of state law... at least when I used to have to go there often for business a few years back.

Although I have to say it isn't the same feeling of the old local full service gas station where the owner pumped the gas and knew your name, your parents names, and all your siblings.

Nope. There used to be a Conoco station here in town that I think everybody and their brother worked at,at one time or another for a dollar an hour. There was a rack between the pumps that had a whole bunch of goodies on it and you'd get a freebie with a $5 fill up. Everything from glasses to silverware to bars of soap. So familiar and popular back in the day that some of the guys did a skit about it in the Lions Club Variety Show not too many years ago. They found a couple of old pairs of coveralls with the name on the back of them, had some girls sit in chairs like they were in a car, even sprayed them in the face as if they were washing their windshield.

None that I know of around here. Used to know guys that pumped gas/cleaned windshields. They talked about a fringe benefit of great views of nice legs.

I have not seen a full service station in years.
But I have seen a drive thru gas station that is a party store/gas station.
I have seen these in Ohio years ago.

I am too young to remember the gas wars. But Dad talks about them from time to time. Its just sad how things have changed, nobody gives a hoot about each other anymore. Makes a guy want to take his family and move to the mountains with no neighbors and just live in seclusion. Just a random thought :)

In Oregon, they won"t LET you pump your own gasoline--I think it is a law there. But I have never had a gas pumper offer to wash my window or do anything but pump the gas, at least since the 70"s.

I remember the "gas wars" that stations had with competing stations. In about 1970 or1971, I bought a tank of gas for 18.9 cents a gallon, the lowest price I ever paid. But then the usual price at a "cut rate" station was about 23.9 or 24.9. I don"t see how they made any money in those days. Now our tax is around double that much per gallon.

I also remember some stations giving out glassware and other stuff as premiums for buying gas there. In those days, you never had to pay for a road map and some stations had free toys or other gizmos for the kids. Windshields were carefully cleaned and if you wanted them to, the gas jockeys would check the oil and other things under the hood. And lots of stations had a mechanic on duty that could fix small problems on the spot or larger problems in not too long.

These days cars need lots less adjustment and tinkering. I do not know of a "gas station" around here that still does mechanical work.

Sometimes I miss the old days.

Every time some one posts on the thread it goes right to the top of page 1 on Modern View.

Classic View is where stuff is all over the place IMO.

Gas and Go at Musser's Market up at the Buck, in Pa. has a self serve set of pumps and a full service set of pumps still. And most places in New Jersey are still full service.

I was coming down HWY 97 and stopped in some little speed bump town south of Bend. Can't remember the name of the town, but it was a mini-mart. The kid automatically washed my bug-infested windshield with a vengeance. Had to chase him down in order to give him a dollar tip. First time in years when someone did more than just pump the gas.

No, classic is where the post are in order of posting, and you can keep track of what you've looked at and what you haven't. Having them come to the top every time someone posts means you can't keep track of who's answering who, and a post nobody answered gets lost pretty quickly.

at the esso station they gave tigerino scratch off cards to win prizes and a tail to hang from your gas cap to show you had a tiger in your tank!

I guess we see things quite differently, classic is a mess to me. Of all forums I use this is the only one I have seen that employs such a mess.

This reply to you comes nearly 2 hours after you replied to me. In modern there are several posts between yours and mine in that time. In classic my reply to you is right under your reply to me with no other posts in between.

Which one is messed up again?

There are a lot of them here in Oregon. Safeway here has gas stations. Many check the oil and clean the windshield. Good places to get gas are the farm coop gas station they even check the air in the tires....James
