Ford 8n Key was left in on position

I converted my Ford 8n to Electronic ignition a year ago and it was starting and running like a dream ever since until today. The key was left in the "on" position overnight and killed the battery. After charging the battery the tractor now won't start so I assume something got fried. Any suggestions on what I will need to fix or experience with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely you fried the coil.
Do you have a front mount distributer or side mount?
Fellows here can probably tell you how to test it with a VOM but you'll need to tell them if the tractor is still 6V or 12V and if 12V, how the conversion was done.

Not sure why you say it is the module JD.
Tractor would run for weeks with the ignition on and not hurt the module. But without the fan cooling it a coil will often fry if the key is left on. Especially on those weak sister front mounts.

Unilite ignition? Those things hate heat and do get hot if the key is left on when not running. You could drop your old breaker plate back in pretty easy and find out.

Don't you love it ? He poasted this on the Forn 8n forum and got no help. Here on TT he got a ton of info from the red guys (and JDseller)

That's why I rarely go on the lawn tractor board when I'm having troubles with the lawn tractor...

About 3 years ago I converted my Super C to 12 volt, put a coil on with a built in resister. One day I went to sart it, wouldn't start, happened to look in fuel bowl and it was down a bit, checked gas, was out. So I put gas in it then got to doing something else in the garage. About 3 hours later I heard this big bang, scared the heck out of me. I got looking around and noticed this oil, tar stuff all over the side of the engine.
Turned out I left the key on and blew apart the coil. Put a new coil on it and worked great after. Suprised me that leaving a key on could blow a coil.

When the engine is running the coil is switching on and off. With the key left on and the magnet at the right spot the ss module is on full time.SS devices generate a lot of heat and will self destruct.

The coil with a built in resister is a fable. No room in it for a big resistor plus the extra heat would explode the coil.
