I asked a question couple weeks ago now that its done is this correct...
I cut, rake and baled up 653 bales of hay. The land owner does not care to do any thing and wants me to handle all. So I split 60/40 with him. which gave him 261 bales to my 392. I then pick ALL the hay up and haul to my shed to store and sell for him except about 90 bales that a neighbor of his picked up out of the field. to which I gave land owner 360 dollars for that 90 and subtracted it from his 261 since it was his neighbor who bought it. To which I hauled 171 of his to my shed and sold it for him. Is this a fair arrangement for both of us.

If both you and the landowner are happy then I would call it a fair deal. By my calculations you make about $1500-1600 minus your input cost for fuel, maintenance, etc. Take whatever amount is left, divide it by your hours input and see what you made per hour. If you are happy with that and the landowner is happy with his cut, once again, I say it is fair.

I have about 21 acres of fescue hay that my neighbor bales in big round bales. I dont lift a finger, he fertilizes the fields as he sees fit, and I get 1/3. Then in the fall he tracks me down and gives me a check for my 1/3 of the bales at market price.

But like others have said, if everyone is happy, happy, happy, then it's all good.

Here in KS you would be getting the short end of the deal, but it may be different in other parts of the country. Most hay around here is 1/3 for the landowner and 2/3 for the guy putting it up. That can even be a little less for the landowner if there was no fertilizer applied. I'm guessing you and the landowner are friends so it's a different situation, but he is getting a pretty good deal with you doing all the work. But again, if you are fine with it, and I'm sure the landowner is OK with it, then that's what matters. Bob

Its not clear about the 90 that the neighbor got- did he pay you for them, and you passed the money on to the landowner? That's the only way it makes sense.

I agree with the others that 1/3- 2/3 is more common- but I also agree that if your arrangement suits both of you, so be it.

Here where i am it is a 5 bales for the one with the equipment and 2 for the land owner either round or square bales.
