Ford 8N with Front Wheel Assist

Saw one at the DuQuoin State Fair (Southern, IL). Did not know suck a tractor existed. Anybody else seen one? I have a picture but do not know how to upload.

Almost has to be one that someone built for themselves. I saw a 9N at the Almelund, MN show a few years ago with FWA made from an army truck front axle. The N's don't have enough power to really utilize FWA. Elenco made conversions for old Fords, but I don't think they did any older/smaller than the 800 or 801 series. (could be wrong about that, though)

elenco and i beilieve a couple of others made a kit back in the day which could be bought, from what ive read on that the kit cost as much or more than the tractor did so to say the least there wernt many purchased, people have made there own 4x4 N series tractors too, the bigest problem with them was by the time a farmer needed to have front wheel assist he usually needed a whole lot more power than a 8n has got too , i dont know there was those ford v-8 conversions too that should have been plenty of power, if you could keep a 95 hp v-8 from destroying the rest of a powertrain designed for 23 hp

Remember that those advertised ratings for the car engines are not equivlent ratings to the way a tractor is rated. That 95 horse engine was rated at 3300 RPM and just the bare engine with nothing on, no water pump or generator to take power. That engine had a taxable (A.M.A.) horsepower of 26.1 and that is a lot closer to the tractor engine. If you would take that 95 horse enging put in a tractor and put it on a dyno at PTO speeds so speed would equal the orignal tractor engine you would come out with a figure of about equal to the NAA tractor of about 32 PTO horsepower compaired to the tractor engine power of depending on year of 23 to 25 PTO horsepower. So with the missleading figures of car rated power to tractor rated is why so mamy people like you get confused thinking you will have that 95 horse at the PTO. The actuall horsepower is so close to the NAA horse power and that is why after the NAA came out they did not make a engine conversion for it as it was cheaper and easier just to upgrade to a NAA but before the NAA was out those conversions were the only option to get that 30+ horse, not a 95 horse in a Ford tractor.

So a Funk engine conversion, a 12 speed aux transmission, and a modified Elenco 4wd, and have quite a tractor! ;)

Elenco may have done early developement on an 8N. Maybe Tony Jacobs will see this post. I believe that in one of my conversations with Tony, he said that Elenco did put the first conversions on 8Ns, but not many at all and he has never seen one. The 8N was underpowered for front wheel assist, and even the later 600 series are underpowered. Most of the conversions were done to 800 and 801 series Fords. This is a picture of a picture I took of a display at the Ford/Fordson Collectors Association show in Buckley, MI in 2012. It caught my eye with the pictures of what appear to be an 8N with a front driving axle installed. The axle looks similar to an Elenco, but looks like brake drums are visible in one of the pictures. I do not know anything about the pictures, and there was nobody present that could shed any information on the pictures.

Yes Elenco did make 4x4 conversions for the 8n tractors beginning in1948 all were hand built per customer order and yes very few were built . I have only seen one in the last twenty or so years . Thanks Tony
