Allis Chalmers WC Exaust Question???

Hey guys it's Bryce. Just got to looking at my two new AC's real quick, and I noticed something funny. The parts tractor on the left has a muffler that went straight through the hood, or used to at least! The good tractor on the left, well look at it, over and up! NO HOLE IN HOOD! Is this a rarity, or has some crazy old farmer just patched the hole up??? Let me know what you think! Thanks, Bryce

Early styled WCs had an exhaust stack that exited to the side beneath the hood.

Later styled WCs had a muffler beneath the hood with a short stack that exited through a hole in the hood.

Sounds good, thanks. That one is a 1940, the other one I am not sure, serial number is pretty messed up! Thanks again! Bryce

Unstyled WC had the exhaust come out the side at an angle, no muffler. Early styled, like Dad"s 1939, still had the same setup. Later styled had the squat muffler under the hood, stuck up thru the hood a few inches. Good way to get gassed. (BTDT) Our "47 WC was that way til the long upright muffler, like on the WD, was installed. Both of yours are styled, should be above sn 74330.

I had a 37 WC (certainly not styled) and it was angled and no muffler. I put on a Oval resonator to be comfortable driving it. Jim

the side exhaust manifold was for Kerosine or gasoline, the outlet is marked with a G[gas] or K[kerosine]. A gas only unstyled WC had the hole in the hood for the exhaust pipe[muffler]. Look on the bock just behind the carb, for the engine serial number, will end with a G or K.
