I found hundreds of pencil sized holes drilled into the top of our septic system drain field. It is a mound system and is made mostly of sand so it"s easy digging.
After looking at it a bit one of these critters comes flying out!
I"m assuming it is some sort of ground wasp but more importantly how do I get rid of them when they are dug in over such a large area (aprox. 30ft.x 60 ft.?

What I've found that works best for insects is RAID Ant & Roach Killer. Besides ants & roaches, it works great on flies, crickets, bees, wasps, scorpions, centipedes & just about any other insect that you spray it on. Kills on contact and has a residual killing effect that lasts about 24 hours.

Digger wasps are largely non-stinging(they will sting you, if you sit on them, or trap them in a fold of skin), independent units, they hollow out a chamber, sting a victim bug, and lay their egg in the drugged victim, and seal the chamber. There must be something in your landscape that they are feeding on. Lots of times the bugs that they feed on cause more damage than the digger wasps. I leave them alone, if you mow your lawn regularly, they generally don't cause much of a problem.

They are mud daubers. Before you kill them,do you see black widows in you neighborhood but not around your place? If so,you can thank the mud daubers. Other than preying on black widows, they can mess up a lot of stuff with thier mud nesta.
