Must say, one of my favorite thing about raising sweet corn is chopping it up when it's all done for the year. Old chopper does it's 1 hour of work per year!

Today on my way to work was the first fields I saw this year where they chopped field corn.

We had about a 1/4 acre of the best corn in 5 years. Then the heat set in and it ripened in two days. had to mow down about 1/2 of it. The first year was great 4 years of disaster. next year won"t plant a thing.
Gave next years seed to the neighbor.

Ours is done too. Both early and 3 week later planting. Good while it lasted. Sure went brown fast when corn matured. Now it"s going to the sheep, several armfulls a day. No chopper, just a CORN KNIFE, that"s been around here as long as I can remember. Can you even buy one of them anymore?

My family has been growing sweet corn for years. We used to feed the stalks and leftovers to our cows. When the cows were gone, we'd run a brush hog through it. But I came across this chopper a few years ago and find it more gratifying than the old brush hog. With the chopper every stalk is cut and chewed into little pieces that deteriorate very quickly. JD80 dude, you know that I would normally have an MM in front of the chopper but both my small maneuverable Molines are tied up - and a Farmall C has to be among the most versatile tractors ever produced - had to enjoy it for a little while.

Ray, Do you know that once the ears are removed the pursic acid level goes way up. Be careful feeding that. This happens only if there is adaquate moisture to keep the plant growing.

I doubt if you could buy a corn knife. I have 2. I think what you would buy is called a machete. Same thing?

I hope you keep close watch for any left over EARS, cause one good hard left over will surly plug your chopper with that lil guy running it. LOL
