Chainsaw question

I was wondering what everyone uses for bar oil in their chainsaws? I do haul all my wood with a tractor and flare box with out the back end if that qualifies for tractor talk. At $16.00 for a gallon of Stihl bar oil, don't think I'll be getting much of that.

I've been using nothing but used motor oil for 40 years with no wear issues. Now adays it tends to be used Shell Rotella 15W-40 since I use it in just about everything.

I have one saw that mfr recommends ordinary motor oil. Got a couple jugs of bar oil from TSC - too thick to properly feed through my saw's feeder. Son-in-law's brother works for a major tree service. They supply the oil - he says he can smell the used transmission fluid, motor oil and whatever they dump in there. Apparently supplier is filtering used oils, and selling it as bar oil.

I use whatever is cheapest. I prefer actual B+C oil but once it gets over $8-9.00 a gallon I cut it 50/50 with filtered used oil.

I have been running 10w-30 oil in my saw for years. I cannot see buying oil with the thickness of honey for my saw--it doesnt flow. I always put a little 10w-30 on the bar first before I start it and then let er run. I have put in used motor oil out of my truck from time to time, but......this could be bad, my saw is 16 years old.

I use Stihl bar oil in all my saws ( Stihl,Husky,Echo and Remington). I just bought a gallon for $12.00. I won't use anything but bar oil.Motor oils are to thin and you run out of bar oil before you run out of gas.I have no trouble with the saws pumping bar oil in winter. I have tried Stihls winter bar oil and don't like it because its to thin and the saw runs out bar oil before gas.

Chains overheat with ordinary oil. It slings off at the top of the bar instead of riding the chain around to the bottom where it is needed.

Old engine oil for me for over 40 years. , but I have one small trimming saw that has fussy oiler so it gets new 10W30.

Menards has bar/chain oil for about $5 this week, probably not as good as stihl oil but a lot better than used engine oil. In the winter I thin it a little with used transmission oil from my tractor, JD's version of hy-tran. Right now I am using Husqvarna oil from L&M for about $8.

The bar oil from menards was too think for winter use in my saw. Rural King has both a summer and winter blend. I added ATF to menards to thin it.
