Save a turtle or death wish?

I was traveling a heavy traffic 2 lane street this morning, when a dodge pickup made a U turn in front of on coming traffic, she almost got T-bone. Drives like a bat out of he!! for about 300 yards and locks the brakes up. While the truck is still moving she jumps out, run into on coming traffic, almost gets run over, picks up a turtle that's on the street and moves it off the road. While she's doing this her truck get's rear ended, total of 3 vehicles involved, while someone in oncoming traffic couldn't stop in time so they served into her lane, hitting her truck head on. She had just left the Dodge dealer with her new $68K truck with under 10 miles on it. She was headed to get insurance on it. I was 5 vehicles behind her. I guess saving the turtle was top priority.

There were 2 people killed by semi trucks on I 94 this morning in separate incidents. In both cases they said the victims were trying to cross the freeway on foot, but they didn't know why. Maybe it was a heavy traffic night for turtles?

Just like the chickens crossing the road, to get to the other side.Damn dangerous,if you ask me. They did make it to the Other side alright, just not what they expected.

A few years ago in our rural neighborhood, a no doubt well meaning lady stopped to move a turtle out of the road, and a semi had to take the ditch to avoid her and her vehicle. Semi overturned and the driver was killed.

I have done it, but not on a busy road or anywhere it would remotely cause a safety problem.

In reality, you just can't stop in these places, its not worth it, as much as you want to help, think of the grave consequences for you and others.

Some go out of there way to mash the turtle, or wildlife, I've seen that too.

Same as when you see some treasure on the side of the road, its never worth it especially a highway or busy road, might be free, but might get you dead in a hurry.

My wife used to work with a lady that stopped all traffic on a busy 2 lane highway. to prevent a turtle from being run over. She just stood there and stopped traffic. Some of the other drivers got tired of waiting and asked her why she did not move it to the side of the road.
She said, I don't know which way it was going.

I hope that everyone involved will sue her to recover the deductibles and the other out of pocket expenditures involved in their repairs. It is probably the only way she will learn to think in a more responsible manner.

When I left there were 4 police,2 fire trucks, and 3 ambulances. Police took statements and information from all the witnesses. Heard an officer ask her just for a turtle? She did save the turtle. I know one of the officer's and he said at least 6 tickets, maybe more. Bad part is by Illinois law person who rear ended her is liable for rear ending her. Officer ask her if it was worth it to have her $68K truck wrecked to save a turtle? Her response was it's ok the truck's brand new so it's under warranty. I couldn't stay for the rest of the show because I had a doctor's appointment.

The law pretty much everywhere is if you rear-end someone, it's YOUR fault no matter what the circumstances.

The unlucky person who rear-ended her will probably end up footing the bill for her new, uninsured truck.

They would've been better off running her over. Probably wouldn't have gotten a ticket or anything.

5 years or so a lady was killed moving a turtle off the road in Northeastern Michigan. She had stopped on the down side of a hill, swampy area.

Truck came over the hill, couldn't stop in time, lady was killed. Same thing was asked around here "Was her own life worth more than a turtle?"

I can sadly attest to that. Back in the late 80's I rear ended a guy who locked up the brakes barely a second before he hit the stopped car in front of him bringing him to an instant stop. I had no warning. I remember seeing a bit of smoke come from his tires and him start to fishtail and wondered what tha--sh&t he's stopping! I hit the brakes but couldn't stop in time. The officer noticed he had no brake lights so only gave me a failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident ticket instead of tailgating he seemed to want to write me (I wasn't tailgating). I got the ticket dropped but my insurance company still paid for 1/2 his damage and some of the car in front of him saying in civil court I was still to blame. My insurance cost doubled for 3 years as a result.

I wouldn't stop on a busy road for a turtle, on a side road I might. But if you hit the guy in front of you, you fxxed up, you were tailgating.

I'm going to guess that when all of this was over, the turtle crawled out into the busy highway anyway.

I did the same thing the other day.. Well except I was on a tractor path. And didn"t risk life and limb and causes a bunch of other people a pia... But I moved him and my son was happy lol.. What happened to common sense..

I am a psychic. I can tell you with 100% accuracy who that woman voted for in the last two presidential races. I cannot post it on here though for risk of it going political and we cant have that. You just take a guess.

Yep, unless the driver you rear-ended had been drinking. Then it's their fault.
Big stink a while back where a guy who was rear-ended got the blame.
He was setting at a red light, not moving and was rear-ended.
I won't defend a drunk driver, but I don't see how THAT was his fault.

Taught my daughter to drive.Told her the only time you swerve is to miss a person. You can brake hard but do not swerve to miss an animal. The day the wild turkeys were crossing she hit the brakes and looked in the rear view mirror to see feathers everywhere. She got four or five of them, but little damage to the car.
