easy tractor to restore?

Thinking of trying my first resto. Would like my 82 year old dad to help. Something to help keep him active. He used to help his father rebuild tractors in the 50s and 60s, so I d like to learn something from him. Ive heard him talk about rebuilding a massey 44, and doing overhauls on 2 cylinder deeres, but I think this resto will be on my dime, so im looking for something cheaper, and not too difficult, as he hasnt worked on tractors for a long time-he was a dairy farmer, didnt have a lot of time when I was growing up. So Ill take suggestions for whats easy and fairly reasonable in terms of $$$

Not sure anything is easy or cheap!!!! I would look for something that parts are easy to get unless you are hard set on a certain modle. Example: Farmall cub VRS OLiver 80

Well Ill tell you right now the 520 was his favorite. But finding one thats neither a parts tractor or already restored I think will be difficult. But if anyone knows of his 520..sold in the early 80s in New Vienna IA to a collector from around Decorah IA..Id be seriously interested. I have the receipt from when he bought it..but it has no serial #..

AC model CA is a good choice. You can buy one pretty reasonable. They kind of have a poor mans independant PTO. Parts are fairly plentaful

Pick something that you will have a use for, even if it only for one purpose like snow removal or cultivating the garden. I don't understand why some people I know restored a tractor and now it just sits in the shed, they never use it.

One of the cheapest "useful" tractors to buy and restore is a Ford N series.
Parts are everywhere, reasonably priced, new and used.
Whether or not that is something your dad would enjoy working on is the question.
I think I would put that question above the cost factor.

Look over on the Ferguson forum....Jeffoh has posted a video of some children putting a Ferguson together at the Vienna OH show. It might give you some ideas!

Kind of surprised nobody mentioned an Allis B. Lots of parts, simple machine, light weight and easy to haul to shows.

if you go farmall c, h, m, super c, super h, super m, or super mta they are cheaper around here than farmall cub and super a p.s. why farm half when you can farmall

I"d also recommend Farmall H. They made almost 400,000 of them, parts are everywhere, dealers are plentiful, PLUS dealers have lot lots of parts, still, very very popular tractor, 25 Hp, can add 3-point hitch, it is very upright, high up in the air so you get right at it, not a lot of bending over.

All of my projects end up costing at least twice the price in repairs as I pay for the item and take about four times the time I imagine they will take to complete, not to mention being spread out all over the garage for weeks, months and in one case about 1 1/2 yrs.
You know, you crawled before you learned to walk. Learning the basics from your father on a much smaller scale and cheaper project, say rebuilding an early JD lawnmower / rototiller might fit the bill. Hope fully it would take less $$, space and time to complete the project. At his age he probably would enjoy mowing the lawn with the finished project working in a garden with a rototiller as much as he did full fledged farming. After all what ever the project, the time spent with your dad will be price less, good for you, know just get to it!!
