New Diesel Massey Engines

Kicking tires this week.Massey Ferguson has a simple little tractor called a 2605 that might be nice to have.I can"t figure out the power rating though. The engine is a Simpson copy of the old Perkins 154 so I was surprised that it puts up about 15% less power.I grew up on a Ferguson 35 and curse the day it left the farm so the 2605 interests me alot.So my question is did they de-tune it for emissions or is there some other reason it won"t make the power that the Perkins versions did.I looked at JD NHMassey and Kioti.Nothing really impresses me and all are made in India or Korea but I need something dependable.

I"ve been really impressed with the Kioti tractors (have a few friends with them). Not sure on the new Massey don"t see too many of the new ones in our area. I think the small New Hollands are made by LS. John Deere is John Deere, good machines with expensive paint. Just make sure you have good dealer support on any of them.

TF I am wondering have you ever OWNED and used a KUBOTA or how are you coming up with you opinion?
Has to be some reason they have upwards of 36% of the under 100 hp sales.

Traditional Farmer, Would you care to elaborate on that? Seems to be millions of the orange tractor with happy owners.
Maybe your brother in laws mothers hairdressers friend had one that broke? That WOULD make them all junk.

We have had a JD 4600 for 12 years, bought it new, 750 hours, I have never really needed the JD dealer. I used to buy my filters and oil there but last year mother Deere forced the local family that had owned and run it for 70 years to sell out to a large dealer. Now I will buy Wix filters from O'Reillys and Delvac from L&M! The only problem with the tractor has been 2 broken valve stems from sticks breaking them off when cutting brush, that's mainly what we use the tractor for.

I would say emissions is the reason for the decreased power output. That"s also one of the reasons that the newer diesels can not get the fuel economy of the older diesels. The local Massey dealer himself told me that. I like the Masseys myself. As far as Kubotas, have I owned one? No. Would I own one? No. I don"t think they are junk or anything but I"ve always said they are cheaper than the others for a reason. I"ve often referred to them as the Hyundai of tractors. I may get blasted for saying that...lol.

TF isn't all wrong.I had a Kubota tractor in the mid 90's that was a piece of junk.It probably would have failed as a good boat anchor. We dubbed it the orange nightmare. At 200 hundred hours it had been split 3 times to find the knock in the bell housing.Never did figured that one out. Couldn't keep seals in the rear end and never had good brakes. The design was very operator unfriendly also.Every barrel has one rotten apple. Traded it in 1998 for a Ford Boomer that we still have.
But on the other hand got 2 neighbors that have them and have had good luck as far as reliability.
Good luck with your decision.

Blame the federales for the reduced HP and torque.

The 2605 is an inexpensive, no frills, basic machine that specs out better than the competition.

I shopped MF, Kubota and NH for a slightly larger no frills machine last year and bought a 2635. The initial quality is certainly not up to Kubota standards but it is considerably heavier and less expensive than competitive models from Kubota and NH.

I've used several they have inferior hydraulics the gearing is terrible and the clutch shaft on the 4WD models will snap using a loader in 4WD.
They sell because of price,0% financing not quality.

The way Hyundai (and Kia) have come on, quality-wise, in the past few years, it may be time for you to pick a different comparison.

That is strange.. In the last 20 years I have sold over 4,000 L series and can truthfully say have NEVER seen or heard of a CULTCH shaft breaking, Gearing, offer three different transmissions HYDRO would give you any speed you want. Glide shift and standard gear with shuttle, again hanven,t had many folks comment or complain on not having the right gear.. Hydraulics tractor for tractor will pretty much meet or exceed the completion, again no complaints on hydraulics. I certainly respect you opinion we all have the right to express them. That is the good thing about this site. I was just wondering if YOU had a bad experience yourself or was just relating what you had heard. Thanks for the reply

I used them as a comparison because one way that hyundai reduces cost is they have the plastic in the dashes and consoles molded thinner than a lot of the competitors plastics to reduce cost. Most people that I've known that have had kubotas their complaint is the kubotas don't have the weight of similar hp Massey,Deere,New Holland,etc...that's why I used that comparison. I suppose that's one way that kubota reduces their manufacturing cost to be able to sell them at a lower price.

Friend of mine with a landscape business has broken the shaft in his Bota twice and its larger than our JD 955 and the Bota loader won't begin to lift as much as the 955.

Do you mean a copy of the 152 or the 154 Perkins? Big difference. The 152 is a 3 cylinder and the 154 is 4 cylinder. I've never heard of a 154 in a tractor. The 152 is legendary in tractors.
