Local news stomach turning point

Is it just the local news out of the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo markets,or maybe just me? I'm not one to vent about stupid little things, but I just couldn't turn the local TV news on when I came in for lunch. I finally can't take it. Maybe it was yesterday that did it,I don't know. They teased an upcoming story about preparing your DOG for the upcoming school year! Probably not the most ridiculous thing they've done, but isn't that a sad statement though?

Seems all there is on any of the channels we get as the "local" channels in the dish are the same thing. Mug shots of minorities and the most outrageous "human interest" and local things to do stories that just make my head want to explode. And they can't do it in a half hour either. One station is live for 4 hours in the morning and two in the late afternoon/early evening then another hour at ten. Another is just about as bad. I'm sorry, but there isn't that much actual news to report so they fill it with this stupid citiot garbage. Is the rural/urban gap that wide anymore? It's just too much for me to think ANYBODY would care about this stuff.

I can get Traverse City over the antenna and watch the ten o'clock news on there at night in the bedroom, but the TV in the living room isn't hooked to the antenna. At least with the huge area that they cover, they tend to report some real news that might matter to SOMEBODY.

Around here what you hear depends on which channel you watch. Unless it is a major incident, each channel reports something different. None of which is that important, and what you hear depends also on which way the station leans politically. I haven't watched much news or TV of any kind in about three years and can't tell that I am any worse off for it. Another reason I quit watching is that I get tired of having to sit through three minutes of commercials just to hear one minute of news. I have better things to do with my time.

It's not today. I haven't even had it on today. It's been building for months,I finally hit the wall and can't do it. They need to put The Simpsons back on or something so there's a choice of what to watch.
Dad's been gone since 06 and was disabled by a severe stroke for a year before that. Prior to the stroke he said he wished there was another source for the news because he was sick of the garbage that was on it. I guess I've finally reached that point.

We dumped our antenna over a year ago, we thought we'd get cable but after a month or so of finding good old shows online we didn't hook up to cable and didn't put up another antenna. Netflix and hulu plus keep us entertained for 8$ per month depending on which 1 we're on, we never subscribe to both @ the same time. It seems we can keep up with the world reading it online.
A couple of weeks ago at a family get-together we were comparing notes about a local murder investigation and I knew more about it that the folks that had watched it on the local tv news. The reason we were interested in the investigation was that 1 of the parties murdered was the son of my mother's cardiologist.

I agree! Once in a while watch a little Fox News as even though they are bias, at least they report on the stuff going on that's important news to me. I remember about 50 years ago, my MIL and FIL would come out for a visit and spend the night. We would listen to the 10:00 news and they would hear the first story and argue about it for the rest of the newscast! Never got a chance to hear any more news!

I would rather hear about how to prepare a dog for back to school, than another school shooting... Be glad... No news is Good News...

IowaJohn,

I'm with you. We haven't had an external attachment to our television for nearly 15 years. We, too, subscribe to Netflix for entertainment (DVD offering, not on-line).

We get a local newspaper, listen to the radio, and occasionally access an on-line news site.

Broadcast TV just isn't a priority for me.

Trouble is,there hasn't been a movie made that I had any interest in seeing since about 1971. The shoot'em up garbage and boy gets girl in the end stuff is as bad as the news.

Same story here. We get one local [so called] news station. Channel 7 in Watertown, and it has just nothing. If someone gets arrested for DWI the might report that as major news or some minor traffic accident but no real news and never any follow-up. Their usual stories are about some fund raiser for some charity or a
school play.

They have an evenning news broadcast and then the same news the next morning. Of course we get to hear all about the local school sports and the weather over and over. We use the internet to find out what is going on and watch FOX or CNN. to get their slanted views.

Not to mention the fact that most of their half hour is taken up with stupid adds.

I have reached the point in my life when I like TV better when it is off.

That is why my tv set took a one way trip to the dumpster four years ago. Too many stupid programs, stupid actors, stupid commercials. Don't like colored tv.

I can't stand it either. It's no longer the news, it's entertainment. I really appreciate knowing that a cat was saved from a house fire - or being told to wear a jacket because it's cold outside. Where would we be without this "news". Hate all of the self glorifying news organizations. They can't even help the police solve cold cases without taking the credit for buying the billboard space. "On My Side", or "Watching Out For Me" They both stink.

I have to agree...our local stations seem to want to make up stories or half truths now-days. I watch Iowa public Television mostly. I used to watch local for the weather but they haven"t gotten that right in a couple of years.

I agree the news has become a haven for white trash sensationalism. I do not watch the news anymore. I get my info from the yahoo site, and I can pick what is important.
What really pizzes me off is that there is REAL news to report, such as-- world affairs, local municipalites running bankrupt, schools that are managed like total schitt and on it goes. But, the dumbing down of the middle class is more important to the local news stations.

I haven't listened to local news in years, just what I catch on the radio between songs. Most is national news. I follow that pretty close but just on Fox.

Ya,I hadn't listened to local radio at noon in years. The Greenville AM station has Michigan Farm Radio Network again and has a little bit of local news right at noon. I turned them on today at noon. The crap they have on the hour from NBC or CBS,whichever one it is,is to the left of NPR so far as to almost drop off the face of the earth though.

Local stations went to extremes whenever Sheriff Joe arrested a bunch of illegals. Last week when Homeland Security raided local businesses, it got minimumal coverage.

As my uncle used to say: "It all depends on who's ox is being gored."

It bothers me that the same stations you are talking about will not come out and do a piece about a tractor show or any local tractor clubs doing helpful things for local farmers. But if there is some local idiot claiming that cows smell bad or there is a gay rights parade, they are all over it. I turned them off a couple years ago.

I used to have dish. Turned it on one day to show my uncle how
to read the signal and adjust his dish and it wouldn't work.
My "cards" had expired 6 months prior.
I figured if I hadn't turned it on in 6 months, I didn't need it.
I cancelled it and never looked back. Haven't watched TV since.
I think that was 2005 or so.

It seems if there is the possibility of any unusual weather they can make half an hour out of that, but mostly it is half a headline and then "We'll tell you more after these messages." It sometimes takes three sets of ads to get to the lame story. My biggest complaint is if there is any severe weather we get the message "Complete loss of signal" from Dish Net.

Can you get channel 17? I grew up with 13 but the ABC network has become such trash. I still watch it occasionally to see Lee VanAmeyde, he was good with Juliet Dragoos. I will not watch ABC's World news, it is a abundant rag. I like knowing the GR news and 17 seems to do it best now.

Ya I get 17. They're getting to be the worst! Trying to fill 7 hours a day. It just doesn't work. I usually turn it on in the morning for the weather. I know right when it comes on during the national weather forecast on the rebroadcast of Rural Evening news on RFD. I flipped to it this morning and that little yuppie was telling people when to mow their grass and get gas in their car. I couldn't take it. Didn't want to know what was going on that bad. I don't want to say too much on the WWW,but that blonde on there in the morning is either asleep or is doing something while she's on air,if you get my drift.

I usually watch 13 at noon because I like to get the news from Lauren Stanton, but the stuff they write for her is getting to be too much to take.

God forbid anything big SHOULD happen. They'll milk it for two weeks. Then every anniversary of the event gets another week in review of it.

I live fairly close to the medium sized city of Spokane, and all the network affiliated stations are there. I think they do a pretty good job of reporting most of the fairly important local stories and also national and world stories. Sometimes they spend way too much time covering various "breaking news" stories. What needs to be said could be done in 30 seconds, but they might say the same things over and over for 15 or 20 minutes, which wastes my time. I end up changing stations.

What REALLY annoys me is when there is a fairly serious situation, like a large brush fire, or a heavy snowfall, or a SWAT call out. The local stations might pre-empt the normal programming and keep showing the same video shots of the situation and say the same things over and over for hours. I could see mentioning that something is happening and giving advice to avoid a certain area, or letting people know when a situation changes, but continuous coverage for hours is stupid. It wastes my time and causes me to change the channel or go do something else.

The buzzwords newscasters use annoy me. ACTUALLY, ALSO, EXACTLY and a bunch of other words are used way too much. There is one sportscaster that will sometimes use "actually" twice in a sentence and possibly 4 or 5 times in a paragraph. One of my little hobbies is counting how many buzzwords or maybe they are filler words the newscasters use in a segment. It makes them sound dumb. Maybe Ted Baxter was not too far from the truth!

I read the Spokane newspaper almost every day, as I have for more than 50 years. It is a mere shadow of what it once was--the paper itself is smaller and has many fewer pages and many fewer articles of any depth. Our local evening paper was absorbed by the morning paper years ago and the competition between the two papers (owned by the same family)is no more. I have been displeased by the more abundant trend that the paper has taken in recent years in editorials and in endorsements they have made. But it is the only choice I have.

It has been said that print journalism is dead or maybe dying a slow, lingering death. Partly due to broadcast journalism, partly due to the internet and computers, and partly because young people just don"t seem to see much reason to PAY for news when they can get what they are interested in for free.

I hope that our newspaper survives as long as I do, and I hope local TV news also continues. I will keep paying attention to both of them, and will also read some things on the internet.

A few months ago there were 2 separate incidents in Does Moines Iowa on the samw weekend where a kid fell through a window screen but fortunately neither was injured. While listening to it on the news I was surprised by the buzzwords that made it sound like you could hardly walk down a sidewalk without a child falling on you. It sure made me laugh at the hype and all the tips for avoiding this in your home. Yeah, it could be a bad deal, but the rate of incidence didn't go up just the awareness. As a matter of fact that is just like most things on the news.

Thot you were going to mention the couple that are being charged with CSC on a 1 year old. I reserve comment on that one.

My daughter quit her job as a TV reporter after 4 years of doing storys about nothing. Each time she pitched an idea for a real story it got shot down. Same thing at 2 different stations. She tried talking to the general managers at both places, got nowhere. Storys about Halloween costumes were more important than finding out who was bribing building inspectors.
Now she works for the American Cancer Society.

Your doing fine...Just getting old and crabby
Its OK....I got the same problom 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I love the term "citiot garbage" What could describe it better? I was personally told in an e-mail exchange with a newscaster that they are trained to "dumb things down" to a 6th grade level, so apparently even youngsters can understand the news. I don't quite understand that. Why would they not want to report on an adult level, so that youngsters watching the news would become more educated and adult-like? That, my friends, is the mentality of our entire news media today.

The thing that makes me angry as a wet hornet is the fact that everytime something like that happens, immediately the lawyers ramp up to outlaw kids falling out of windows, or lawsuits to make screen manufacturers make thicker screens or something stupid like that. We are already in the process of legislating ourselves out of existence due to the fact that sooner or later, every one of us will have some accident or other something else that will have the wolves(lawyers or politicians) devouring all that we worked all our lives to get.

I remember when you could watch weather on the weather channel, and history on the history channel. Science on the discovery channel. Now, all reality CRUP-OL-A

No more dish tv, just tune in for the weather using the antenna, and back off again.

I might watch a particular segment on Fox or The Blaze or CNN but mostly what I do is get my real news from the internet sites. We also have a local internet news site that isn't too bad.

We were talking at church a couple weeks ago and I found out I'm the only person there who never saw any Katrina coverage, any Tsunami coverage, any of the big events. I was the only one who actually read the news rather than watched it.
