Tire pressure

I am mowing in a hilly sandy area. Seams like every hill I come to the tires want to spin. I want to lower the tire pressure to get a little more traction. What is the minimum pressure I can run without spinning the tire on the rim? The tires don't have water in them. The tires are on my JD 401 industrial with my 7 1/2ft flail mower. The tire size is 16.9 x 24 Thanks Stan

One question you need to ask what type of tires do you have on the back. Are they the Truff tires or the Ag. farm tractor tire? If you can take a look at your tractor tire make sure that there not twisting when useing them. Low pressure is good but being a flat tire means more work on the tractor.

Lower pressure won't help you a bit in sand, it is not like a hard dirt surface or like dragster tires on pavement. I drop my 15.5s on my 3500# puller down to 6 lbs. for a hard sticky track but for a soft track they go back up to 9-12 so that they have a full profile and will dig all the way across.

You're not comparing apples to apples. It is common
in sand to lower tire pressure for a wider foot
print. It's not about pulling since pulling
anything, you'd most likely just dig a hole in sand.
Same as putting duals on a tractor, lower ground
pressure for soft spots.

Well stick, I don't think that you are comparing apples to apples either, unless Chief has flotation tires on that Deere. Flotation tires work at far lower pressure than conventional traction lug tractor tires, and they flex in order to conform to the surface. If you get tractor tires too soft the tire is pulling only on the edges and the middle will be pressed up in and not holding any weight or helping with traction. You want adequate pressure to hold the middle down so that your tire is pushing evenly all the way across.

just to answer your question, you will not spin the tires on the rim with even 4 lbs of pressure in them as you are just pulling a mower.
