JD 4450 134a Conversion

I posted on the JD board but didn"t get a complete answer to my questions, so I thought I would ask here.

I am converting my JD 4450 over to 134a. I am replacing compressor, some lines, evaporator and expansion valve. After flushing the system and getting it all back together: 1: How much R-134a should it take (think about 3.25 lbs), 2: What type of PAG oil (think PAG 46), and 3: How much PAG oil (I have found anywhere between 11 and 13 ounces).

Thanks in advance for your help. I hope to get this project done this weekend.

N I am thinking you are right on and if anything just a tad heavy on the oil. Think you could go 8 10 oz on the oil but your figures will work.

If switching to PAG oil be SURE ALL the mineral oil is flushed out of the system, or you will have a system clogged with, for lack of better words, BEAR SNOT!

Consider ester oil. It gets along with traces of mineral oil. If you use PAG oil the viscosity depends on the compressor you are using. The info can be found with a google search.

I have been one to often simply use ester oil, (which "plays nicer" with any residual mineral oil) trouble is the rest of the world, the DEERE shops, especially, use ALL PAG oil in their conversions and tune-ups so if you use ester and it ever goes to the DEERE shop there will be "issues"!

It is SO important to put a durable conversion label on the compressor so the next guy knows what he is dealing with!
