sediment bowl

Howdy,
Last fall I got some water in my gas ("51 M )I drained the tank, took the carb apart, put in fresh gas and she ran Ok. I didn"t use the tractor in almost a year but it fired right up and I drove it maybe 500 feet and the carb started dripping gas and it died. My question is about the sediment bowl, it only filled about half way when I turned the gas on but the tractor ran (for a while). Any idea whats going on? and do I have to take the carb off again. I thought the fuel system was clean as a whistle last fall and tractor stored indoors.
Thanks,
Bob S.

Bob,
I can't say this is what happened to yours, but with our 706, we installed a new sediment bowl assembly and hooked everything up, turned on the gas, and nothing flowed into the glass bowl. We loosened up the hold down nut at the bottom a little to get the gas flowing into it,until it was full, then tractor started right up,but we had a leak. So we tightened the bowl a little more til it stopped,It works great now,but changed the cork gasket to a rubber one that helped, I think. At least no leaks and fires off every time.Runs all day cheaply for us with the loader and pulling our van brunt cultivator thru our garden, and elsewhere. Hope this helps you.
Regards, LOU

If the needle in the carb. is closed, either because the carb. bowl is full, and the float is holding the needle closed, or the needle is stuck shut, the carb. won't allow any gas flow in, therefore nothing will flow out of the bowl. The trapped air in the sediment bowl will be replaced rapidly by gas once the carb. calls for gas. Unlike a diesel, since the carb. bowl is vented, the air will not cause a problem.
Needles can stick closed, or be held open by a hung up float. I once put a tiny nick on the edge of the screwdriver slot installing a new seat, didn't see it, and it caused the needle to stick when it turned just right! (They're usually triangular.)
So, if you have a good flow from the tank, through the bowl, through the carb. drain, then any issues are probably your float/needle and seat.

Take the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and put a clean container under it. Gas should flow a steady stream, if it doesn't you have a restriction somewhere, work your way back to the tank and find it.
