Cleaning Shop Towels

I use cloth-type towels in the shop here. I want to re-use them and my wife has an issue with them going into her washing machine (can't really argue that one) Was thinking of getting an old manual wringer type machine to keep at the shop just for towels.I know I would have to probably put some of the greasier ones through several "cycles". What do you guys do? Not to excited about using the throw away paper type towel, they don't last very long and you end up using a lot of them

I use cloth towels and they go in the washing machine.
I couldn''t care less if my wife would object to it(she don't)cause that washing machine is 50% mine too.. jeez.

If she rather washes them by hand i would say ..go ahead love,..just make sure they get nice and clean

i got a old maytag for mine about like this one

At my work we use cloth towels. we just have an old washer and dryer in teh corner that we only use for our shop towels. can usually oic old washers and dryers up cheap on craigslist.

When I was on the road doing appliance repair a woman had 2 washers. One for regular wash and one for husbands barn clothes.

I use scott blue shop towels. Problem with them isn't me using too many, but if my Grand daughter or Son needs some a whole roll goes missing!

Best solution. These old washers can be used in unheated shops, just lay the hose on the ground to drain the pump.Wringer washers are made in SAUDI ARABIA now. very expensive.

I have an old Maytag wringer washer from back in the 50's that I use to wash my shop rags. Works great.

Me too. That machine is half mine! And that's where my rages get washed. We just run a cycle with detergent, no clothing or anything else to make sure it's clean before washing anything else.

I use an old Maytag wringer, shovel full of soap and hot water, let er buck down by the barn, lay em out on the grass to dry

Talk to someone who works for Cintas or other uniform companies.
They wash white wash-clothes and towels for hospitals as well as
uniforms, runner mats, shop towels etc.
They wash them in one ton (wet) batches at the big shops.
Anyway, when some red shop towels get mixed in with the whites, they
turn out pink (of course) and the hospitals will not/cannot use them.
So Cintas throws out the entire one ton batch. Washed and dried.
Free for the asking and it happens often!

I just wash mine in the regular washer in the house. I pre-soak the hand rags in a tub with a strong mix of Simple Green. Then run them in the washer on the longest cycle that is has. Then I just wash a load of my work cloths after the rags. The load of work cloths seems to "clean" up anything left by the shop rags.

I keep a box of the throw away Blue paper towels for the first swipe of some thing like the grease in a gear case. These I throw away. It is just common sense to not throw a rag with a glob of grease into the washed rag pile.

What do you say when she finally lets you back in the house?

Back in the 60's, a drag race shop I would hang around had a solution for that. Late at night we would make a run to a local laundromat. We tried to use different nights as well as different laundromats so we did not get in trouble.

My mother always used a wringer washer. Us kids even bought her a modern washer but when she died, it still was unused. A neighbor bought her wringer washer for his shop. You might try Craigs List. I have seen a few on there.

I bought the woman a new machine and put it upstairs so she doesn't have to go the basement. Then I use the old one in the basement.

Putting one in the shop would freeze up in the winter and there goes the water pump.

ust to set the record straight.
My wife is pretty easy going and the best wife any man would want and i don't need permission like some of the other posters seem to to use an appliance for what it was intended and that includes washing coveralls and shop rags that are really dirty.
A range can be and is used to cook food or heat up a part or check a thermostat.
A dishwasher washes certain parts just the same as dishes.
And the kitchen table doubles as a workbench if need be.
I used to bring newborn calves on cold winter days into the kitchen/living room to dry off and warm up.My wife would dig right in with towels and such to get the job done. :D
We have a farm you know and thank the Lord my wife is not a stuck up city lady pulling up her nose for anything but parfume.
