OT:Would you buy a car that was RV towed?

Looking for a car for #2 daughter. Found a 07 Saturn Vue with 150k. It was towed behind a Motorhome and is towing package equipped (which I don't need). Do you guys see an issue with towing miles? The car is spotless

I towed my Alfa Romeo across the country three times, no damage. Check the windshield for pits.

A front wheel drive car would need to have been towed on a dolly to keep from trashing the transmission, or otherwise have the transmission disabled.
I doubt that it could be towed just by putting the transmission in Neutral, but you might check the owner's manual for instructions.

I saw a Toyota being towed by a motorhome on the interstate last week. The car had exhaust coming out the tail pipe.Still haven't figured that one out.

Some people seem to get away with it, but with the trans in neutral and the wheels turning, the transmission is not being properly lubricated. Depends how far and how fast it had been towed I guess. Don't think I would buy it if others are available.
just what I have seen. Rx

We had a new 9n ford when I was a kid, towed it between fields several miles apart. We started the engine and put it in neutral. Engine had to be running to pump oil to the transmission and differintal. I believe the owners manual instructed to do so.

Maybe it was a pusher ?

Likely you had to keep the engine running to pump oil in the tranny.

A big selling point on Saturn's is the system that they have that allows towing without running the engine. I understand it involves over running clutches, But do not know the specifics.

I was thinking that when the Saturn came out in early 90's?, one of its options was a 12v circulating pump for the tranny specifically for towing.

I tow a Chevy Cobalt all over the place. With four wheels down. The Cobalt and the Pontiac G5 have a certain transmission which permits this. It's even in the owner's manual and states that if the vehicle is to be towed, the preferred method is four wheels down. It even gives instructions on which fuse to pull so as you can leave the key in the steering unlock postion without depleting the battery. I put a switch to do this 'cause I do tow it quite a bit. I believe the Saturn has a similar transmission. Check the owner's manual. The only concern I might have is like someone else said. The Windshield takes a bit of a beating (unless you cover it like I do)

1. Saturn was designed to be towed.
2. The odometer on a Saturn does not show towed miles.
3. No special pumps, no lockouts, just hook up and go.

You learn something new everyday. I've seen lots of cars being towed with the trans in neutral and the engine idling - I've never seen an automatic that allowed for towing by just hooking and going.

I wonfer if my 2007 HHR has that transmission - it should be the same as the Cobalt.

The Owners Manual states either transmission can be towed with the wheels on the ground. The manual transmission can be towed just as it is used for driving. If you tow the automatic transmission for extended miles you need to add some additional oil. No mileage will be recorded unless the ignition switch in in the On position.

Myself and many RV owners loved Saturns (Auto Trannys) for that very reason, they could be straight towed all four wheels down on the road with no transmission mods or any problems nor did any miles register. I towed 2 or 3 of them on all 4 wheels (with auto trannys) all over the country never a problem. But since they stopped making them and unsure of future parts availability I got out of the Saturn business but since learned many of the later ones used like the 2.2 GM engine (and other regular GM parts) for which parts and service will be available for years to come.

I owned several Saturns and liked them and towed them never a problem. Im towing a Pontiac now with auto tranny thats another one of them you can tow 4 down no probs no mods whatsoever.

Have a friend that bought a Ford Focus. Owners manual says it can be towed, all wheels down. After towing a few thousand miles the transmission locked up. Ford said they would fix it once but, don't tow it again. He said they since took the statement out of the manual.

My Dodge Dakota 4x4 can be towed on all four wheels.

There is a section in the owner's manual that describes how to set it up. There are some steps you do with the 2wd/4wd selection switch and the gear shift. Then it's good to go.

The VUE was designed to tow flat. They have a dry tranny.
Dennis (I put over 100K on my 03, then gave it ti my son)

Son has a Ford Focus we bought that was towed. It had 24K on it when he got it. Has about 60K on it now. No problems. Still has the towing setup on the front.

Had a neighbor who towed a VW bug behind his combine for a while. Forgot to take it out of gear one day, and towed it down the road in first at 15 MPH. Wasn't much left of the engine when he got to the next farm.....
