Practice driving school bus?

BIG RUH

Had to go to town this morning. Got behind a school bus. Driver stopping at every driveway, sits there for about 15-20 seconds, no kids ,no flashing lights and stop sign, then continues to next driveway and repeats. Notice there are no kids on the bus and none to be picked up. Driver going down the center of the road even when cresting hills. This is a county road that 20 feet wide. Almost seemed like the driver was afraid of the bus.
Glad I don't have any one riding that bus.

The good thing about all that is the protection and good safety record for the little ones on that big bus. There have been a few mishaps around here over the years, even with snowplows, etc. without harming any children.
The same, however can't be said about what happens when they get in the building. We will do whatever we have to to keep grandchildren out of that place.

He was probably pre-driving his route that he will be assigned to when school starts. It is not legal to use the overhead light if you are not picking up students. They need to pre drive them so they know how long the route will take to run. Then they know what time to leave in the morning and to give the students an approximate time to expect the bus. Just my guess anway. Although they may be training a new driver.

Practicing the route. I can remember with much fear and dread seeing the bus coming down the road a week or so before school started. Now my oldest will start school next Tuesday.

If you know what school district the bus is from, you should call the transportation supervisor and maybe even the superintendent.

Learning the route and stops and timing the procedure is one thing. Probably a good idea to make the first day of school go a lot smoother and safer. But driving down the middle of the road, especially on the crests of hills is dangerous and illegal. I would guess that the people that supervise the buses and the school district would be VERY interested in something that could cause considerable liability for the school.

Maybe a new driver that is not used to driving something as large as a school bus, and maybe unaware of the danger they are creating. Good luck!

Tried that once, after a bus driver pulled onto a four-lane road into heavy 70 mile per hour traffic without looking or stopping. It was the third time in two weeks the same drive had done that. So I called the superintendent and he wanted to argue with me. I suggested he not take my word for it (the dumb bunny) and follow the bus one morning.

It's not so much the practice in driving, that takes time, its the learning how to stop the 3 "underprivileged utes", from beating a non addicted student half to death, that slows things down!

I am a busdriver the individual you are talking about may be new or timing their route usually the biggest proplem us drivers fear is the drivers who don't stop for buses picking up or dropping off students was just at a bus meeting was told of drivers having people run the light daily thank God I only have it happen once every other year or so Do people not know the laws and the possible danger involed

All the buses from the bus service were out this morning. I use to drive school bus and we never got a practice day. They gave you the route and what time you had to have the kids at school.

(quoted from post at 19:54:21 08/13/13) This is a DUH question! How else do they determine the pickup times....7:18, 7:23, 7:35, etc.

Why would pick-up times be determined. Do they give all the mothers a pick-up time these days?
