sticking valves

if it's carbon on the valves making them
stick, Set the throttle about 1/4 to 1/2
& get a spray bottle of water. remove
the air cleaner elbow at carb & spray into
carb small amount of water, not too much to
stall warm engine. The cool water will help
breakup carbon. The engine might sound terrible
but this is only carbon that has came loose
& passing through the cylinder. It won't hurt
the engine.. The Ford 240 & 300 were noted for
this 7 I've used this method on many with about
80% success. Save's doing a valve job....
Might not hurt to install a valve seal on the
stems if possible.

I completely agree. It worked wonders on a 1955 Land Rover. Smoked like a bandit for a while but I had time to enjoy a beer or two while it worked out the old crud. Did have to adjust the valves a time or two as the tolerances changed.

Sticking valves cause back fire low compression missing on one or mor cylinders and some times a no start condition. Fill the cylinders with ATF and let sit 24 hours then spin it over with the plugs out to clear the cylinders. If any thing is going to unstick them ATF will do it

Thank you all! Wonderful answers. What is ATF? In what sort of can? am I supposed to buy it?

Kind regards

(quoted from post at 21:09:52 08/13/13) ATF = automatic transmission fluid. Welcome to the forum. I am 1/2 Finn.

Thanks also for the suggestion to spray water in after removing the air cleaner: should this be done before the AFT/acetone treatment or after?

Water was used on Model T Fords to clean out carbon.Any time you pull a cylinder head for gasket problems the cylinder that is taking in water will be much cleaner.Old time mechanics were smarter than you think. They started using water to clear carbon from valve seats.I have had small engines quit running when a bit of carbon stuck to the valve seat.

Thanks for all kind answers and comments tried with AFT fluid and acetone 50/50.

Had some success as I got it to run on 3 cyl insted of 1.
I then tried water with a syringe through a small knife cut hole in the rubber hose between air cleaner and carb.
First I felt I might be lucky but then i was back where i started.
Next I will try with STP and would like to mix it with something as it is so thick, any ideas what would help. Had in mind to put it through the spark plug holes.
Any suggestions?
