Is there a good high wheel push mower anymore?

Two years ago in the spring our old mower died and would have needed a new engine or some major work. I got one of those $200 high wheel mowers from TSC since we had grass growing fast and needed something to keep it down. It has been rather unreliable and I would like to get an idea of what to replace it with when it dies. I would be happy to pay more to get a good quality high wheel mower that will last a while, but I am not sure if such a thing can be had anymore. I need the high wheels because our lawns are bumpy in places and I also use the mower on the paths in the vegetable garden. Something in the 20-22" range is about the right width, there is not room for a bigger mower in some of the places I need to cut. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I would try a Honda or a Snapper mower. Only problem is they are expensive but should last for years. Another option would be to put a new engine on your old mower. I have had great luck with rom Harbor Freight engines. Would like to hear others experience with these engines

Zachary:

I've got a "Murray" High-Wheel 2-in-1 combo, cut & mulch with a 20 inch deck that I've had for about 6 years now and it still works great (Briggs & Stratton engine). You should be able to find newer models of that brand out there, mine came from Walmart.

Too funny (coincidental?). I just replaced the B&S engine that turned itself into a boat anchor late last year with a brand new Honda Engine from NorthernTool (www.northerntool.com)... Wish I had done that years ago instead of nursing that old B&S (no idea how old it was, since I got it used for $5 and kept it running for 7 years)... And it is a high wheel mower... 22"... Starts every time on the second pull (provided you remember to turn on the gas!)...

I have thought about that, can get an engine from HF for about $100. Only problem is the deck is not that well made either, but it is better than the engine, seemingly.

I bought a 7hp "Predator" from Harbor Freight for my Horse tiller to replace the wornout Tecumseh. For the $99 spent and no modifications it was the best thing I could have done for that thing.

I have 3 or 4 sitting around that I picked up for the cost of going and getting them and all of them run. One even came with a bagger and it is the one I use the most. All have B/S engines on them

I'm using a Honda HR214 we bought new in 1990 the first 4 years I had it we lived in Florida (mow 50 weeks/year) the nest 4 in Tennessee (40 weeks/year) since 1999 we used it in Wisconsin. It's never given me much problems.

got to love the hr 214 honda i bought one new in 1985, ran it untill 1998! some of the time in commercial use, it never let me down probably the best walk behind mower ever made

for a good walk behind today you will need to step up to the dr mower, as you found out the cheap built chinese junk out there today isnt worth bringing home regardless of brand, ive tried to repair 2 of them for friends both mowers are less than 1 year old and both only mow town lawns, there not fixable, just cheap chinese junk. honda makes good stuff too, but im not sure what they make in a high wheel mower designed to cut 'off lawn' type terraine might look at them though
