JD 425 mower

Bought a 425 gas mower with low hours. Want to change oil and filter, and dealers have two different answers. One said a straight weight #20, and another says 5w30. Who is right, if either one? I know it's important to change often, just want the right one. Didn't get a owners book, but have one on order. Just like a little kid, want to use it right "now"!!! So can't wait.

How do you know you can trust what someone here tells you? My first thought is to ask someone you know you can trust, like a reputable small engine repair shop near you. Or, didn't your 425 come with a service history? I use 10w30 in my JD 275 with no problems. Don't know if that's best.

I run 10w30 in everything around here except the cars that spec 5w20. The last Simplicity I bought, the manual called for 30wt, the manual for the Kohler called for 10w30, it got 10w30.

Well the recommended oil is 10W-30 for temperatures between -4F and 104F.

The sticker above shows this information. It is from the on-line operator manual for a JD 425 mower. I thought there was a decal like this on the inside of the hood. I know the service intervals are on that decal.

So both of your dealers can't read the book. LOL

The oil filter number is AM107423

Here is a link to the entire page of information concerning changing the engine oil.

Couple things to watch for on those 425's if you're new to them. The motors (in at least production to '95, maybe later), had plastic cam gears that tend to go out around 500 hours. I got 600 hrs. out of mine, dealership said I did good.

Also there's a $28. diode on the left side of the motor that goes which means the motor doesn't. The new one I installed was an updated version and has been good since.

Good little tractors except for the above, ours does all the mowing and tilling on about 8 acres of yard and shelterbelts.

I have an F725 JD it is about the same engine just vertical shaft.
I keep 15w40 rotella around for my diesels and use it in about everything but the auto's.
I have ran this oil for several years. Tried synthetic once ,but that made it smoke at start up bad.
